Growth Scan - what can I expect?

Hi

Currently 34 weeks pregnant and I have a growth scan booked in for Tues. What can I expect? Will they just be checking baby's size? or will they be doing measurements?

Will they tell me if they suspect i'll need a c-section??? Or anything like that?

Confused

Thanks!

I've had 2 so far. First was v thorough, they checked all sorts of measurements, incl fluid, second took no more than 5 mins and I think she was a little slapdash.

As lunatic said they are notoriously inaccurate.

I had one at 33 weeks, dont expect to see your baby, if that makes sense, they`ll be measuring various parts of him, legs, head, belly, fluid etc, so you might not get to see the whole picture, again, I hope that makes sense.

They are supposed to be inaccurate as others have said, I was told 4 weeks ago that mine is measuring too small, in that at 33 weeks he looked like he weighed 3lb 8oz, so I have to go back on Wednesday for another one, and to see a consultant, but Im not worried, Ive got a really active one, and all his bits are there and doing what theyre supposed to do.

They may tell me he has to come out sometime this week or next, or they may tell me he`s had a growth spurt, although not too much of one, mummy doesnt want to squeeze out a 10lber thank you very much Grin

Try not to worry and do update us on Tuesday

They do head/abdominal circumference/thigh length. They then calculate weight from this. It's not very accurate. I have had loads of growth scans.

They do usually have a general look about too, I got some great views of my ds1 via growth scans, honestly his face was so clear, like a 3d scan. Probably because I had so much fluid. I saw the full lips and chubby cheeks etc, still the same at 4yo.

i had a growth scan at 32 weeks - baby weighed 3lb 11 oz. have another booked in for first week of january to check growth again as he's measuring on the 5th centile for weight.

am now 34+5.

experience was much like everyone else's and I agree - did feel a little slap dash.

DontLetTinselDragOnTheFloor · 20/12/2010 08:21

I had growth scans with DS2 and DD. DS1 was over 10lbs so they were a little concerned :o

They just measured the head and abdomen size of the baby IIRC.

A word of warning: if you do not want to know the sex, do not look at the screen! I got a clear shot right between DS2s legs at 37 weeks which rather gave the game away.

Thanks everyone - makes me feel a bit better - and I already know it's a boy - so no need to look away!

I'll let you know how I get on (snow aside - might end up getting stuck on way there!)

Lots of time looking at blood flow, making sure the placenta is functioning well. At least, that's what they did at a 35 or 36 week scan when I was judged to be measuring too small.

kelly2525 · 20/12/2010 20:42

Mine was pulling on his cord when they last tried to measure the blood flow, something tells me he`s gonna be difficult and awkward, like me Grin

The midwife told me they may need to do an internal on Wednesday, thats if they still think hes too small and decide to get him out sooner, they will want to check everything is in place, if it is, then I could be induced, if not, they would do a c section

Not sure if it was on here or if a friend told me, but apparently they call the cameras they use to do the internals dildo cams!!! Oh and they put a condom on it Blush

Oh how Im looking forward to Wednesday and the appointment with the male consultant

I got a full view of baby once they had done the checks in previous preg. Maybe depends on hospital :) Seeing as I am having to go for my third anomaly scan, I'm hoping they can see what it is as so far its unco-operative :(
