Hello,
I'm 35 weeks gone with my first baby, and have been fairly lucky with not getting many of the general ailments which afflict pregnant women (apart from a horrid case of piles last month -urgh ). So this week, I have been waking up with my fingers being incredibly stiff and sore, and one finger in particular (my 'swearing finger' on my right hand) being so sore I just can't bend it for most of the day. Is this just water retention/general swelling as it's really annoying and sore and I'd love to see an end in sight for this. Gesturing at bus drivers just isnt the same any more..!

Thanks!

Your swearing finger?? Oh - ok - just got it (read the bus drivers bit).

I've started getting carpal tunnel syndrome in the last month (I'm now 40+ weeks) but this started with pins and needles in the morning and has continued with pain and weakness around the wrist / thumb joint area. I don't know if fluid retention would affect other fingers in the same way.

Do you sleep with your hands clenched or something? You could try splinting at night or wearing a wrist / hand brace - which is what they recommend for cts. No better ideas, I'm afraid.

I had this after DS was born and was told that it was 'just one of those things' and would run its course. It was quite painful and things like trying to grip his bottle was very difficult. I was tested for arthiritis because my symptoms were similiar but it di go away a few months after the birth. I had a friend who had it too after her babies were born. Could be the same thing for you. I'd speak to your midwife next time you have an appointment.

oh i had this with both pg's

my lovely midwife used to give me hand massages

get someone to give your hands a massage or you can do it yourself, and try and sleep with your hands raised on a pillow at night
