Feeling really grim - nearly 11wks and have got a really nasty cold/bug. I've been taking paracetamol to bring my temperature down but am really suffering with a sore throat and chesty cough. Is there anything at all which is safe to take???

have you tried calling NHS Direct or talking to a local pharmacist?

SpannerPants · 09/12/2010 11:34

I've been having soothers - I don't think they have an active ingredient but they do help a little bit.

NHS direct recommended honey and lemon and steam inhalations to me. Hope you feel better soon x

I had soothers, also hot water with honey, lemon and ginger cordial in it - yummy!

You can get glycerine syrup from the chemist which is good for the cough, and it doesn't have any active ingredients. I got some from a bigger Tescos pharmacy.

Tons of honey and lemon, and olbas oil steam inhalations gets another vote from me.

Hope you feel better.

honey is probably on some stupid governemnet list as 'bad for pregnant women'

amazing all ths stuff they say you can't eat

if our grannies had all that 'advice' they'd probably have starved!

Another advocate for honey and lemon. Ooh and I put a drop of eucalyptus oil in the bath to clear my nose.

Not just ordinary honey - take MANUKA honey. I had a sore throat for days a couple of weeks ago and my mum swears by it, I was desperate so tried it and it was like a miracle cure. Had a tsp in my raspberry leaf tea one evening and by the morning it was gone. When my mum is ill, she will take a spoonful 3 times a day. Its marvellous and I will never give my dc's anything else now. It is about £10 a pot, but when you put together the cost of lemsip, soothers, cough mixture etc, it really is worthwhile. Try googling it for its healing properties.

I had a really bad cold and chesty cough last week, and bought some Ribena, and had hot ribena with a spoonful of honey - it was so delicious! I havn't had even cold ribena for years but it was really lovely and tasted even better than lemsip. Obviously lemsip has decongestant, so for that side of the 'treatment' I filled a large bowl with boiling water and stuck a towel over my head, and had a steam facial for about 10 mins - it really helped clear my throat and nose. Feel much better now! x

My drink when I'm feeling rubbish is hot water with a bg chunk of lemon, chopped raw ginger and a teaspoon of honey. Hope you feel better soon x

Thank you all very much. I am off out to buy some honey and lemon and I will see if I can get one of those steam inhalations.
