Colouring Hair?

I am 35 weeks and feeling fat and ugly, so figure at least getting my hair done will polish this turd a wee bit...

Thing is I'm sure I remember reading somewhere ages ago that pregnant women shouldn't dye their hair? Is this right? I did dye mine earlier on in this pg but I used a "natural" hair dye from a health-food shop - but when I looked at the ingredients it still had all the usual peroxide and crap in it with just a few "organic" and "herbal extracts so I can't imagine what they use at the hairdressers would be any worse?

Anyone know what the official line is?

I've always dyed my hair blonde so I did loads of research on this when I found out I was pregnant. Almost everything I read said to avoid hair dyes that contain ammonia (garnier do a lovely 1) or alternatively get highlights at the hairdresser as the dye is on the hair not the scalp. Also make sure u r well ventilated when u have the dye on as the fumes r worse than the dye itself xxx

why not henna ? its easy and cheap I've been doing it for a while now and it seems to calm my frizzy broken hair, there is also a hairdye called Naturtint from holland and barrett and other health food shops thats not got ammonia in etc

So having a full head colour at the salon is a no-no? But highlights are ok? I was thinking of either an all over red or a t-section of highlights so I guess that makes the decision for me! I've spotted a few more greys sprouting recently, so I need to cover up those bad-boys!

Pretty - I read that henna dye was ok, but I couldn't find it to buy anywhere. The only one I could find was that "natural" one I bought, but as I said it was still full of loads of chemicals! Where do you get just pure henna dyes?

I asked my midwife about this at my booking in appointment (I have lots of grey hair!) and she said it was absolutley fine to have hair dyed - i've had mine done every 6 weeks at the hairdressers...

Enjoy being pampered...

Yeah I wasn't sure if it was just one of those over-cautious/guilt-trippy bits of advice, as I'd never actually heard any "official" warnings about it. Think I remember reading that the way the media guessed that JLO was pg was that she was papped with grey roots that she obviously hadn't had touched up for a while! Obviously Hollywood frowns on hair dye in pg, but never actaully heard a Dr or MW condemning it! x

I rang my hairdressers about this as was due to have mine coloured on Saturday. I'm 14 weeks and they said they prefer not to colour until after the 12 weeks has passed. I was having a semi-permanent. My SIL who is about 24/26 weeks has long blonde hair and has been having her roots done without any problems.

Lush do blocks of henna - bit of a faff to use but the results are worth it imo - and it made my hair incredibly shiny for months afterwards!

GlitteryBalls · 08/12/2010 15:47

Yes my instinct would be that at this stage it would be ok - I avoided it throughout the first tri as that was the summer and my hair dgoes nice and sun-kissed then anyway! I may look into henna from lush but the nearest one is a bit of a trek now I'm living back out in the sticks. I might just get a nice semi from superdrug or something as I'm feeling a bit indecisive (and broke) and I imagine there are a few less nasties in those than the permy ones, and that will prob last me til when baby is born/I want something different anyway. But then of course I'll be breastfeeding hopefully Hmm

I don't know what the official line is, but I dyed my hair all the way through my previous pregnancy (even in the first 12 weeks) and my little boy turned out fine! My husband's a doctor and said it would be OK. Couldn't stand the thought of being completely grey for 9 months!

I waited until I was 12 weeks pg for my own piece of mind, but was advised by hairdresser and midwife that it was absolutely fine, I have been having mine done every 6 weeks since I was 12 weeks.
