Hi,
Any advice on when I should mention I am pregnant? I am only 10 weeks at the moment and had a miscarriage before so REALLY don't want to say anything yet, but my work involves a lot of travel, and I've just been asked to go somewhere remote and malarial, in an unpressurised plane. I can't go, but can't think of a decent excuse either! At this rate, my boss, yoga teacher and hairdresser will all have found out before my mum!

you do need to tell your employer, if your work carries an element of risk to you or your baby, your employer can then carry out a risk assesment..and if you tell your boss it should be confidential..good luck and congrats

I would have thought that it would be a good idea to put it in writing too - even if you actually tell him / her in an informal 'friendly chat'.

Thank you. I know I should tell him - but I think he still hasn't got over the shock of me calling last time, to say could I have a day off work as I was miscarrying! (I hadn;'t taken any risks then - it was just bad luck) the problem is the next conversation is that I want to quit altogether - this job is just not compatible with being pregnany, breastfeeding, or having a baby you may want to leave constantly to travel.

I'd have thought it best to leave that conversation for a while yet, though, eh??? I mean - whilst you're pregnant, it's his problem to make the job bump-friendly.

TP - I emailed my boss.... even though he was in the next office. My job didn't involve international travel, but I had a long commute carrying a bulky laptop.

Yes email is terrific, isn't it? I just had to shout the fact I'm pregnant down an international phone line to a colleague I have never spoken to before - she was the one suggesting I come with her to this highly risky place. She took it rather well considering she's never met me.
