Hi everyone, random question for you - when did u start getting stretch marks during pregnancy? I've not got any yet, am still smothering myself in all sorts of lotions and potions, but am worried they will suddenly pop out all over the place some time in my 3rd trimester! Also, is it just my tummy and thighs I need to be keeping an eye on? Xxx

Mine appeared once DS was out Hmm I did pay attention to the bump, bum and thighs.

electra · 27/11/2010 16:21

It just depends - I got them at about 36 weeks - I was really big though (8lb+ baby and lots of amniotic fluid) It sounds awful but the best way to avoid them is to eat as much as you need but no more!

Meglet · 27/11/2010 16:21

DS was born at 37 weeks and I didn't get any with him. DD was whipped out at 39 weeks and I didn't get any that time either.

I used Clarins. Bio Oil and Lush stuff all the time, I'm pretty healthy in general. I think it's genetic though as my mum and grandma didn't get them.

incyspider · 27/11/2010 16:22

I started getting them at something ridiculous like 12 weeks... Shock

clarebear1 · 27/11/2010 16:39

I used cream religiously but they still came. I got them about 36 weeks id say, god them bad too :-( Im doing the same in this pregnancy but i dont think theres actually room for anymore.

TooImmature2BMum · 27/11/2010 17:17

Don't forget to put oil on your boobs too - it might not help, but it can't hurt! I don't know yet if my efforts will actually prevent them from coming (none so far, but I'm only 26+2).

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 27/11/2010 17:47

I didn't get any but was big to begin with, I did use oils but think it is down to genetics really.

ethelina · 27/11/2010 17:50

Not a single one until after the birth and my tummy shrunk - then they appeared as 2 groups either side of my belly button.

ethelina · 27/11/2010 17:53

There's bugger all you can do anyway, the creams and lotions won't reach deep enough to prevent them occurring.

lainey1981 · 27/11/2010 18:18

37 or 38 weeks (thought had got away with it), got a few tiny ones under my bump - am hoping they don't get much bigger (40+6)

naomiclarke1987 · 27/11/2010 18:43

i had none until about 34 weeks, then i got one, and then they just carried on from then on! Even now at 39+5 i don't have LOTS but.. more than i would like!

It depends how elastic your skin is really!

I didn't realise they could appear AFTER the baby is born!!! I know the creams don't really do much, but at least they make my bump look smooth and I feel like I'm trying to do something, I know if I didn't use anything an got loads I'd be cursing myself for not at least trying!!! Xxx

It's genetic so there really isn't anything you can do about it (apart from not get enormous... but that can't always be helped!). As another poster says creams etc. don't reach the layer of skin that scars.

I got them suddenly at 33 weeks.... thought I might get away with it!

The good news is within a few months you could hardly see them, they faded really quickly.

My husband also told me when I was sad about them "but I love stretch marks! I love yours anyway!" which was cheering.

Nicolaplus1 · 27/11/2010 20:02

I agree with lucy101 about them being genetic!

My DH said to me " if they told you before you were pregnant you are going to get them, would you not ave botherd? "

Think it wa his way of saying geta grip lol

I am quite attatched to my mummy scars now Grin

Mmmaa · 27/11/2010 20:10

I have them already at 13 weeks :(
I tend to get them anyway when my weight fluctuates but never on my belly.

Bio-oil seems to help a lot though - reduces the redness!

rudbekia · 27/11/2010 20:11

so far only place i've got them is round my appendix scar - the main thing with lotions and potions is they stop your skin itching like mad as it stretches...but they wont do much else. the marks are caused by the collagen fibres in the skin actually tearing - but they do fade so they become almost impossible to see.

after looking at the prices of some of the products out there i've stuck with plain almond oil which doesn't smell or irritate my super sensitive skin (baby oil bought me out in a spectacular rash!!!)

GlitteryBalls · 27/11/2010 21:00

I've not got any on my bump, and I'm 33+3. I do have a few tiny ones on my boobs though. My theory is that my weight has always fluctuated, (anywhere between a size 8-14) whereas I have always been quite flat chested so the skin on my tummy is used to stretching whereas my boobs aren't! In terms of expensive lotions and potions, all I've used is plain old palmer's cocoa butter body every day when I get out of the shower. It's about £2. Can't be doing with greasy oils! x
