Hi, I ended up at the consultant today after phoning the mw and telling her I had a weird feeling in my vagina like something was dropping down in it. Anyway, they go me into the consultant as in 2003 I went to the colposcopy clinic about 3 times as I had abnormal smears. Now I can remember reading a leaflet about a loop diathermy but I have no idea if I actually had it done at all, or if I just had a colposcopy. So they got me in just incase I HAD had it done and I was feeling this dropping feeling. The consultant was lovely and had a look at my cervix and said it looked perfectly fine, but because I was panicking so much (I had an emergency app and ended up waiting an hour and a half) they did an internal scan and she measured it at 3.98cm at 21 weeks. The consultant said before the scan he thought it looked great but just incase he would check it again in 2 weeks. Does this sound okay and am I just panicking for nothing? I mean, I dont even know if I even had the loop thing done, so I'm guessing its just a precaution? Can anyone help? Thanks xx

Just googled this as your post intrigued me!! Apparently normal cervix length is 3cm or greater so you are normal Grin

Hi, I've never had mine measured but pre children had an extensive cone biopsy which was done under general, I know I've had a lot removed as they always comment on it, just to reassure you I've had 5 children and went over due with all of them! so it didn't seam to effect things.
I also had that dropping down feeling when pregnant especially with the twins, I tryed doing alot of pelvic floor excercises which seamed to help.

You're fine. I have had my cervix measured several times as I was in and out of the colposcopy clinic lots last year and had LLETZ treatment (if you had loop diathermy you'd probably have bled for about a month so would probably remember). My cervix first measured 2.6cm (at 18wks) so they were a little concerned, but it hasn't gone down and last measurement at 28 wks it measured 3cm, which is brilliant. Almost 4 is great, anything below 2.5 and they keep a close eye on you, below 2cm and they put in a stitch but its sounds like you've got nothing to worry about and they're keeping a really close eye on you. You don't need to worrySmile

It's fine, promise! :) Anything above 2.5-3cm is. You were absolutely right to get it checked though and it's great they will recheck.

I was worried too last pregnancy. Turns out mine was 3mm (yes, mm!) and I was 1.5cm dilated at 18w3d, so I had a rescue cerclage/stitch that evening which saved DC2 - she got to 35w5d. So as you can imagine I'm very much an advocate for getting these things checked out!

Thank you for your replies, they have made me feel much better :)
I got a bit further with my gp today. I thought I would go check exactly what they HAD done to my cervix, as no body seemed to know, and it turns out I had a colposcopy and small biopsy done in sept 2002, then I got preg with ds in dec 2002, went back to the colposcopy clinic when I was 21 weeks preg with ds, and told togo back to normal smears. So I'm guessing this small biopsy they did before I was preg means nothing at all with regards to weak cervixes (lol sp??), or they would have said when I went back at 21 weeks preg the first time? Am I getting stressed for nothing??? Confused

Thanks for posting on this subject. I also had a colposcopy, but years ago, and was quite surprised when the EPU took great interest in this and said I would need an additional cervical scan asap. I didnt actually ask why so I'm glad to get the answer here. Got the examniation in a couple of weeks I think. Its nice to be monitored! Thats another paranoid worry I can tick off the list.

Hi :) did you have any bits taken off your cervix, or same as me, a look with their special binoculars and a tiny biopsy done?

First time I just had 2 small biopsies which they said wouldn't make any difference. I then had to have further treatment, mine was called LLETZ to remove an area of pre-cancerous cells on my cervix, they took away 1.6cm depth of cervix across the whole front of my cervix, thats why its so much shorter now and they're concerned. But things are ok as my cervix is holding out an I'm almost 36wks now. If you just had a biopsy you really don't need to worry, its only a tiny area they've removed. Relax and enjoy your pg if you can!
