Anyone else planning one last holiday for two??

I'm due May 9th and I'd really like to squeeze in one last holiday for me and my husband before we become three! Purely selfish but I wondered if anyone else was planning this and where they were going?

I love the idea of sitting on a Caribbean beach but I'm not sure our budget would stretch! Unfortunately I think around Feb time will be the latest I can fly, and all the places that are hot then are far away (aka expensive flights).

I like the idea of Thailand but I'm worried about hospitals...

Well we already had a holiday planned when I found out I was pregnant. (I'm due 30 May). Checked with the hospital it was OK to go. They said yes, as we were going to USA so should anything happen they had a good health system. Their advice was to go & enjoy. So we had a fabulous California road trip, spent a fortune & did everything we wanted to do.

I've been to Thailand in the past which was wonderful, but like you I'm not sure of their health system. However, when a friend was caught up in the Tsunami the hospitals in Bangkok were better than the UK.

Are you in the UK? What about the Canary Islands? Nice & warm in Feb.

Whatever you choose, hope you get to spend some time together just the 2 of you before the mayhem commences Grin

Good luck, & many congratulations x

I'm also due on 9th May, and we will definitively have a 'bab-moon' holiday! Nothing expensive, as we're a bit strapped for cash at the moment, but I don't mind as long as it's relaxing! Maybe a nice city break in Paris or Venice, or a chill-out holiday somewhere in the countryside!

The most difficult thing will be to persuade DH to take time off work...

JBrd · 19/11/2010 13:16

That was meant to read 'baby-moon'!

Thanks for the advice/kind thoughts everyone!

laurielou, sounds like you had a great holiday. My husband and I did a California road trip in June this year :)

Yes we are in the UK so maybe the Canaries would be a good option! I'll start investigating...

Wouldn't worry too much about hospitals - health care can be excellent in so-called 'third world' countries.

DH and I are currently on our final pre-baby holiday in Indonesia - I'm 31 weeks and loving it!! Frankly I need SUN and BEACH at this stage, not city breaks which involve lots of walking and pfaffing with guidebooks etc.

Caribbean is expensive but East Africa is nice in February, and a much cheaper destination. Lovely beaches - Indian ocean has best beaches in the world as far as I'm concerned! As long as you don't stray too far from a major city you'll be fine hospitals-wise. Much easier to go to these places pregnant than with a little one in tow Grin

If that's too adventurous, Dubai has good weather in February, and is not nearly as far as Asia. Excellent hospitals there.

I've just got back from a week in Lanzarote, I'm due in April so it will prob be the last week of sun before I pop. Despite hearing that Lanzarote is grotsville supreme I risked it and it was really very nice. Went to the north of the island, which is much quieter and pretty - not full of Brits and not horrid fish and chips resorts. Just small fishing villages. It was so nice to have a week of doing nothing and it was warm enough to lie on the beach when the sun was out. It was a little on the cloudy side though, so it you want guaranteed sunshine then it's not great. Nice short flight though and pretty cheap too.

I stayed here www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/Canary-Islands/Lanzarote/holiday-house-Playas-de-Orzola-y-Arrieta-Haria/p65340.htm?uni_id=77115#location-bar run by a nice Scottish couple, only downside is that when I booked it everyone could use the pool but they've changed that so you can only use the pool if the three bed apartment isn't booked up. Good location though and pretty house.

Or, if you could bear long haul, South Africa is amazing that time of year. I work for a company that's based outside Cape Town so travel there quite a lot and it's fab. So much to do and you wouldn't have to worry about quality of healthcare either. It's only 11.5 hour flight so not too bad and it will be HOT.

Hope that helps!

Does anyone know what's the latest you can fly? I hadn't been thinking about it till I read this thread and now really want to go on holiday just me and DP! We've never been away just the two of us as he has 2 sons already and this is our last chance. We couldn't go till the new year and I'm due April 10th, what do you reckon? Sorry if I'm hijacking OP :)

Thailand sounds lovely, is it good weather in Jan?

JoEW · 19/11/2010 16:31

I think it varies from airline to airline but some say up to around 30 weeks, I think. Some are earlier and long haul is a bit dodgy as increased risk of DVT. Also not good if you're already retaining water.
