Scan at 6+4, What Might I See?

midori1999 · 17/11/2010 12:12

I am quite nervous. I had a scan at 5+2 ans they saw a gest. sac and the start of a yolk sac, but measured the gest. sac at 4+4. They did say that was nothing to worry about.

I had been booked in for a second scan next week at 7+2, but I have changed it to tomorrow (they couldn't do Friday and suggested this) as my DH cannot now get the time off work next week, but is off this week. I don't want to go to the scan on my own, because last time when I went for my second scan they confirmed I was miscarrying.

I'm worried 6+4 is a bit early though, has anyone had a scan then and what could they see?

Thankyou.

A little blob with a heartbeat. Like this but the blob in the sac will have a flickering bit inside it that is the heart.

jasmine51 · 17/11/2010 12:41

Exactly what showaddywaddy says. and dont worry about any measurements - at that small they can get it wrong..eg measure width rather than length. My 6 +4 wk scan measured at only 2mm and therefore 5wks but consultant ignored than and 8wk scan was 16mm, a healthy size. Enjoy it..seeing that hb on the screen is magical

midori1999 · 17/11/2010 13:10

Thankyou. I am worried I won't see a hearbeat, but purely because it's too early, Is it definite I'll see a hearbeat at 6+4.

If you are definitely 6+4 then yes you can expect to see a heartbeat.

It sometimes depends on the limitations of the machines or the sonographer's ability, lie of the baby, fullness of bladder etc but by 6+4 the heartbeat will be present. I had a scan at a similar gestation and had a 6mm blob complete with heartbeat. A week later it was 14mm and had the beginnings of arm buds. They change A LOT at this stage from one day to another.

Showaddywaddy · 17/11/2010 13:15

Bear in mind that if they can't see a heartbeat, your dates might be slightly out. Did I read right that they put you back a few days at your last scan? The speed at which they develop can mean a matter of a couple of days between seeing and not seeing a heartbeat. And iirc the heart beats from 6 weeks.

midori1999 · 17/11/2010 13:31

Thanks. They didn't put me back or anything at my first scan, but they did say the sac measured 4+4 and not 5+2. However, she said not to worry at all about that. My dates can't be very out as I got my BFP on CD21 and surely I must have ovulated at least a week before that, or almost that, to get a BFP?

I think as long as things have progressed from last time, I'll be reassurred a little. I think I'd rather get an indication of what to expect when myDH os there than go next Tues. alone and find out I am miscarrying again.

Best of luck to you.

I've been there. My first pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage and then had a few problems with bleeding in my 2nd pregnancy (hence the early scans).

Please let us know how you get on. Smile

pinkpeony · 17/11/2010 13:48

With DS, I had a scan at 6+2 and saw the hearbeat. With DC2, I had a scan at 6+4 and saw only the sac and was told it measured 5+4 and to come back in 10 days. After the longest 10 days ever, had a scan at 8 weeks and saw a heartbeat. At my dating scan at 12 weeks, they dated me bang in line with my LMP dates. So even that early on, the embryo can develop at different speeds - there is a very good chance that you see a heartbeat, but if you don't, it doesn't mean that things have gone wrong but you will just need to come back for yet another scan. Hope all goes well!

Muser · 17/11/2010 14:50

You may not see a heartbeat. Please don't worry if it's not there as that doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong. I had a scan at 6 weeks and they saw the gestational sac and yolk sac but no heartbeat. I was told this was fine and while the heartbeat is often seen around 6 weeks it varies day to day. At 8 weeks I had a repeat scan and the heart was beating away.

lilly13 · 17/11/2010 18:05

Maybe you should consider postpoining it until 8 weeks. I was like you - very worried - and I know that I would have gone crazy if there wasn't a heartbeat at 6+4... It is easy to get these things wrong at early stages, depending on the machine and the experience of the specialist. I decided to wait until 8 weeks and was measured 7 weeks back then... If you do end up going now and there is no heartbeat, do not worry - come back in 2 weeks and have it done again!

lilly13 · 17/11/2010 18:06

PS good luck!!

bessie26 · 17/11/2010 21:08

like the others have said, you might not see a HB if your dates are slightly out, but they should at least be able to tell that it has grown?

Good luck!

PacificDogwood · 17/11/2010 21:13

They might offer you a vaginal scan if they cannot see a HB through the abdominal wall. I had those several times, they do not hurt, and give an amazing picture with much more detail and clarity Smile.

As others have said you might not see a HB and that does not necessarily mean bad news, but normally at 6+ weeks you'd expect to see one.

Very best of luck, I know this is a very scary time. Wishing you the very best of luck.

SpannerPants · 17/11/2010 21:34

I was 6+2 weeks by dates but 5 weeks from the scan, so I've got to go back next week. I feel like time is standing still!

Good luck for tomorrow x

Piglet33 · 17/11/2010 21:38

Hello there. I had scan at 6 weeks and saw tiny blob with flickering which was the heart beat. Good luck!

midori1999 · 18/11/2010 08:49

Thanks for the replies.

I am quite nervous about what I might find out today, but have to hope all is well. Hopefully today at least things will have progressed from the last scan.

Hi midori1999, I hope you don't mind me saying but I remember you from another one of your threads and I think you're incredible.

Good luck with the scan and I hope it's perfect and everything is boring and normal :)

midori1999 · 18/11/2010 18:27

Thankyou everyone.

We had the scan today and the baby measured 8.7mm/6w 5d and we saw tnhe heartbeat! Grin

I realise that doesn't mean everything will definitely continue to go well, but for now everything's perfect! DH and I both had tears in our eyes, we were so relieved.

Brilliant news.

A blob with a heartbeat then? That's your baby that is.

Seeing a developing baby with heartbeat is v v reassuring.

I'm so pleased for you.

PacificDogwood · 18/11/2010 19:08
