i to am very overweight but can assure you they can see the baby perfectly well!

Toothache · 20/09/2005 15:47

Peahead - I don't think its a problem at all.

A girl I work with is about 18 stone and it was never an issue.

Good luck with the scan!!

Lizzylou · 20/09/2005 15:48

I would have thought so, if there was going to be any problem I'm sure someone would have said by now (midwife etc)... By 20 weeks I was about 3 stone overweight last time and was fine...enjoy your scan.

Congrats on your pregnancy

dabihp · 20/09/2005 15:48

they can see it, but u might have a problem getting a picture...

auntymandy · 20/09/2005 15:49

I dont think you will have a prob. let us know how you get on

Janbo25 · 20/09/2005 15:53

like i said i had no problems and got clear pcitures each time made no difference what so ever

vickiyumyum · 20/09/2005 15:55

you'll be fine i was in the same situation with my ds2 and never had a problem with scans. the sonographer may moan as it is more difficult for them, as they have to press harder, but def not a problem.

womba1 · 20/09/2005 15:55

Peahead, i too was incredibly overweight when carrying my ds and the scan and pictures i got were as clear as day.
I'm pregnant again and have my next scan in 2 weeks when i'll be 21 weeks... and yep, i'm still very overweight and my mw is always telling me that being overweight is only a problem if you find it a hinderance in every day life.
Please stop panicking and enjoy seeing your little one x

Thanks everyone, feeling more hopeful now!

Peahead, I was much more overweight than you when I was pregnant - I started my pregnancy at over 19 stone - and all of my scans were fine. I first saw my baby at 5 weeks, and had a lovely picture from my 12 week scan. They will be able to see the baby, and it's nonsense to suggest that you won't be able to get a picture. Just relax and enjoy.

hockeymum · 20/09/2005 17:18

Peahead. Like everyone else here I worried about that too with my dd but it was absolutely fine. I was heavier than you and they had no problems you could see everything clear as day and the pictures were exactly like everyone elses (even the skinny ones!). Relax and enjoy the scan, you get to have a really good look at the baby which is lovely.

The only problem I had with my weight was that they couldnt find the heartbeat that well in labour (fine for all the other traces before labour) so they simply put a scalp monitor on the babies head once my waters had gone to get a really accurate monitoring of the babies heartbeat. I even ended up with a caesarian and that was no more complicated than anyone else's really but you are more likely to end up with a little infection on the scar site (which I did but cleared up with antibiotics) because less air gets to the scar site when you've got spare flesh!!

Really dont worry though, you are likely to have a perfectly healthy pregnancy and I hope you really enjoy your scan

hi peahead..I have had my son and this baby while being very overweight[about 6 ston]. With ds I had a scan at 20 wks but they couldnt see all organs so asked me to come back 2 weeks later...something that can happen fat or thin. With this baby I had scan at 22wks and there were no issues with being able to see anything. Even had scan at 8 wks and saw baby clearly. Good luck with your scan.

auntymandy · 21/09/2005 12:28

have you had the scan?

RTKangaMummy · 21/09/2005 12:32

How did it go?

peahead · 21/09/2005 17:09

Hi all, had scan and it was absolutely fine! only problems were caused by me drinking a botle of coke beforehand.....resulting in very mobile baby! You were right vickiyumyum about sonographer pressing hard but she didn't make any comment. The pictures are lovely. On the report it says the view was "suboptimal" which I presume means "not quite as good as it could have been?" But it doesn't matter anyway, she saw everything clearly enough. Thanks to everyone who posted in response to my panic, can't believe I got so worried now!!
