antibiotics for throat infection

I have had a horrible head cold which seems to have now trickled down my throat. I feel like it's infected and I'm worried it will turn into a chest infection. I'm 36+1.

If my doctor suggests antibiotics, are they safe? I've avoided taking anything during pregnancy but I don't want to head to labour with chest issues - all that hypnobirthing breathing practice for nothing!!

I've had to have antibiotics this pregnancy (about 22 wks) which I wasn't thrilled about but had to be done (wisdom tooth infection). An untreated infection may well be more harmful to the baby than taking antibiotics. I had Amoxycillin which is a fairly commonly prescribed one for pregnant women and children I think.

I've had four lots due to UTIs. The third time round I tried to go without, but I actually started to feel unwell and Dr was worried it may have spread to my kidneys, but as soon as I started course I got better.

Obviously sometimes you can fight the infection yourself - I have had a chest infection that I didn't take antibiotics for and it cleared up eventually on its own; and under normal circumstnaces UTIs often will - but in pregnancy they advise ALWAYS to take antibiotics with a UTI as the risks to baby are high if it spreads to kidneys and worsens.

Not sure what the drill is with throat infections, but the best thing is to see GP and they will weigh up the risks/benefits of treating it/leaving it to go away by itself. Many antibiotics are fine to take when pregnant and they will never prescribe anything unless there is no evidence of harm to your baby. x
