how many times do/did you see a midwife after the birth?

I was told at my NCT class that midwives only come and see you twice (in S Wales) after the birth!

Is this standard? Apparently I can ask to see them more often but I just assumed they would see me a lot more than that. I am due around Christmas so worried about the support I will get.

I'm in Kent I saw mine 4 times over 2 1/2 weeks before she discharged me. I think you should find 2 is the minimum and they actually visit as necessary according to how you are getting on.

Hi Dueling. My experience (in Cardiff too) is that they will tailor it to you and your baby's needs. Particularly for a first time mum. With my first, we had serious problems maintaining weight and so the MW came most days for over a week, then handed over to the HV. With my second, she came once, asked if I was happy to go it alone (I was) and that was it. Both times, the amount of contact was just right. Just make sure you ask for any support you'll need and I'm sure you'll get it.

3 times, once was the PND MW as I requested her before I was discharged.

No midwife came to see me once i was discharged. I think this was because i had no baby with me - he was in hospital.

So twice seems pretty good - don't forget there are good HVs who will support you. Mine was fab but again i only met here when DS came home

Blimey - I'm quite lucky then, I think I get quite a few more than two, but can't remember offhand exactly how many - I'm seeing my mw soon, so I'll repost when I've asked her again!

interesting about the breastfeeding groups. Some of my friends have said not to go until I have the baby but others have said it's good to go beforehand.

I'd at least get the number of your nearest NCT breastfeeding counsellor (as well tas the national helpline) and details of when the breastfeeding groups are.

I'm in SE Scotland and I saw the MW daily after DS2 for 10 days. I think she may have not come one day, but that was it.

With DS! I lived in a different part of Scotland, but again had a mw visit every day for 10 days.

dd1 about 6 visits over 10 days

ds about 4 over a week

dd2 every day or other day for 4 weeks (she had problems)

They have a minimum, but will continue to visit if it is needed.

ds1: twice
ds2: 3 times
ds3: once

With dc3 the mw visited every other day for about 10 days, dc3 had no problems but we seem to have pretty good ante and post natal care here.

im in south wales and my midwives came everyday for 2 weeks and then every other until 4 weeks. Obviously you can call them at any time and they will come straight out to you if you need any help. Good luck :)

The MW and HV were terrible IME so quite frankly i wish they hadn't come at all. They did visit twice though.

Mine didn't see me at all after the baby was born. Again he was in hospital so that may be why. I was told to have some postnatal checks back in the ward. They asked are you alright. I said yes, then I left. Complete waste of time

As necessary. Mine came every day for 2 weeks (and the hv came regularly too). They, rightly, worried I was developing PTSD.

They were lovely and very good indeed.

They visited me at home every day until DS was 10 days old, then I moved over to the Health Visitor.
