Went to my first midwife appointment yesterday and along with all the usual comments/advice she told me that if I ate too many carbs/sugars I'd have another big baby (DD was 9lb 1). I don't why MW assumed I stuffed my face while pregnant, I really didn't eat anymore than I would eaten when not pregnant IYSWIM. I have never been overweight in my life, all the baby weight dropped off right after I gave birth last time.

Does anyone know if your unborn baby is what you eat? Or this is a load of cobblers? No one has ever said this to me before and GP and HV both said DD's size was down to her genes as most of both sides of her family are fairly tall. DD is a bit tall for her age now but in no way fat.

no afaik it's a load of tosh, unless you had gestational diabetes in which case what you eat can affect the baby.

chandellina · 05/11/2010 20:59

at over 9 lbs, there could be a suggestion there had been gestational diabetes, or that you might be susceptible to it. My SIL who has five kids had a 10lb second child and was thereafter put on a lower carb diet to keep her blood sugar and the weight gain down.

your MW may well be overreacting about nothing but i suppose it's something to consider.

Nonsense.

Big arse, not big baby. Grin (in my case, lol)

BessieBoots · 05/11/2010 21:02

I had a big 'un and was told by midwife that it really has nowt to do with the amount I ate.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 05/11/2010 21:10

I had hyperemesis badly with DD and was two stone lighter when I gave birth than when I got pregnant - she was nearly 9 pounds Smile

The only link afaik is through GD. Presumably you'll get checked for that like everyone does (pee tests for sugars and GTT if something shows up).

Big babies can run in families though.

I practically mainlined macdonalds breakfasts and fat coke when I was pg with my DS's. I gained 3 stone (although that was from being underweight at the start) and the dc's were 7lb 4 and 7lb 6.

gorionine · 06/11/2010 11:00

Not a rule that makes sense to me. Ds2's pregnancy is the one I controlled what I ate the most and he was my heaviest baby. I did sort of stuff myself with DCs 3 and 4 and both were small babies.

saffy85 · 06/11/2010 18:56

Thanks everyone. I have trouble believing this theory. My diet wasn't as healthy as it could have been but wasn't that bad compared to others (I hardly know anyone who didn't seem to take the eating for 2 thing literally Grin they have all had babies of various weights).

I think I was a bit put out by the assumption I stuffed my face really. Not gonna get worked up anymore about it. In celebration of this, now going back to my stuffed crust pizza Grin

I had hyperemesis. I puked all day every day and lost weight. My DD was 8lbs 7oz. If the theory was right she would have been a 6 pounder!
It was an element of competitive motherhood I didn't know existed- lots of people commented on her being a "big" baby like it was something to be ashamed of!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 08/11/2010 13:28

I was shockingly ill throughout my whole pregnancy and only put on 10lbs...DD was nearly 9lbs. My cousin put on 4st and had a 6lb DD...no correlation whatsoever!

wideratthehips · 08/11/2010 13:37

1st baby 7lb 2

2nd baby 10lb 8 Shock

3rd baby 8lb 3

AND i stuffed my face, seriously, with first one as i was working long shifts as a nurse and found it difficult to cope, but had more control with the other two. i have been told big mum doesn't mean big baby.

your midwife may be thinking more about you than baby
