Hi there

I'm a bit stressed and wondered if anyone has experienced what I am experiencing and able to offer any reassurance :)

I am 15 wks pregnant and on Monday I started to get pains in my stomach with shooting pains down my stomach to my crotch.

I was quite alarmed so managed to see a doc. They took a urine sample and found an infection, glucose and thrush including on my nipples Blush I also have a cold sore under my nose that has come back twice.

Anyway I have been given a 7 day course of antibiotics and canestan cream. Since taking the antibiotics for 4 days I've noticed that my discharge has become more yellow and a bit heavier, the canestan is also taking time to work. The pain has pretty much gone though.

Do any of you know whether this is normal when taking antibiotics? Do the symptoms get worse before they get better? Am worried that things might be getting worse and antibiotics not helping.

Will try to call midwife tomorrow but last time was told take the full course of tablets and then have appointment with doc 48 hours after last tablet (which I've booked).

Okay will stop with the long message- any advice/tips please???

Hello there,

I have had a UTI earlier on in the pregnancy. I had tummy well groin pains and they went. I took antibiotics and they did work. You need to take the full course I cant stress this enough. I have worked in microbiology for 15 years and for 2 years in a hospital delaing with all sorts. You need to fin the course. If your still feeling it has not cleared up you need to go back and speak to the doc (which your doing). He should request senstivity tests on the urine to see which anitbiotics would work should there be any further infection there. It could be the anitbiotics prescribed were the wrong ones for the bacteria in your body thats why the further tests need doing. Doctors give you what they think is right there and then to help out. Hope this helps? Good luck.

your problem is that the antibiotics will clear the uti, but make the thrush worse, making your discharge worse. Take your antibiotics and then request a thrush treatment after you take the last antibiotic to clear the thrush. You may need to repeat this as thrush can be tricky to get rid of when pregnant.

Hi everyone

Thank you so much for getting back to me, really appreciate your advice.

I think the antibiotics may be clearing up the UTI, but making the thrush worse as they also kill all the good bacteria and allow the yeasts to go mad! I had exactly the same - 2 x UTIs, then stubborn thrush from all the antibiotics! It took one dose of internal cream, then pessaries three nights in a row to finally clear the thrush! Just go to the dr and keep going back if it doesn't shift. Don't buy over the counter as you can get it all prescribed free and the doc will advise best treatment for when pg x

yeah, antibiotics are known for causing horrible thrush, so if you had thrush before the antibiotics it can only get worse!
I would suggest finishing antibiotics, continuing the thrush cream, and if the yellow discharge doesn't clear up then go back to the doctor, it may be something completely different like Bacterial vaginosis x
