and could they tell? and were they right?

We had a scan today, am 14 weeks tomorrow and the sonograher said there 'could be something there' meaning a penis. I could see what I thought was a penis but she said its hard cause it could be cord.

Congratulations firstly.

I think that is very early to tell confidently the sex of the baby. Will you be getting another scan at 20 weeks?

Mine had a look at 13 weeks but couldn't be sure until she looked again at 20 weeks.

Look up the nub theory. It is possible to tell between 11-13 weeks. It is something like 80% accurate. Our NHS sonographer had never heard of the theory but we had a private scan done and she predicted correctly based on the nub

I asked them to look and guess at around 12 weeks for my own interest... and in both cases they got it right! They were protesting a bit and one said she was only 55% sure.

Weirdly I knew both times too and they just confirmed what I thought.

she didn't say the anglle was xx she just said there was 'something' there,

by 14 weeks is there a penis rather than nub?

my obstetritian was able to determine my baby's sex at 12 weeks. it depends on the baby's position and on how modern/advanced the equipment is...

lilly13 · 04/11/2010 13:17

ps it was not an NHS scan

My sonographer told me at my 12-week scan that I'm having a girl. She said she was only 70% sure it was the right call, but said if she had to put money on it, she'd say it was a girl.

I'm now 28 weeks and she got it spot on!

If you get a good view, and an experienced sonographer, I think you can find out accurately much earlier than 20 weeks. But this was a private scan as I live overseas, not NHS.

TotorosOcarina · 04/11/2010 14:16

I was thinking of going for a private one at 16 weeks to find out, I'm just so impatient!

I've said its a boy all along so I'm sure its a penis I saw Grin

due to complications during first pregnancy my consultant did all my scans the second time and he said he knew for definite at 12 weeks.

The midwife told him he was making it up but he was adamant and he was right

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.. you will love them no matter what sex they are

I found out with both DS's at a 12 week scan that they were boys.
They were private scans but the sonographer was totally certain in both cases (and was right)
