Does anybody have any experience of a heavy bleed in pregnancy?

Shall try to keep factual.
Am 11 weeks 6 days in my second pregnancy.
Had some bleeding early on so had a reassurance scan at six weeks and everything was fine, heartbeat etc.
Been waiting for my dating scan to come through.
Saturday night, woke up at midnight to go to the loo and had a massive bleed. Really heavy, contained clots.
DH rang midwife, was advised to go to A&E.
Spent a few hours there then was trf to a gyne ward.
Had an internal exam, the doctor said the womb was closed, but obviously the bleeding was a concern.
Had a scan this morning, consultant said there was a heartbeat, everything looked fine, and placenta looked fine too. Could see no reason for bleeding. Sent me home and told me to take it easy.
Has anybody experienced a heavy bleed like this? What were your experiences? Should I be expecting a further heavy bleed, or is it likely that the bleeding will taper off and that will be it?
I've got a note to give to my GP, and I'll phone the midwife tomorrow to update her, hopefully I'll get my dating scan date through shortly.
Is there anything I should be doing? Anything I shouldn't be doing?
Any advice would be appreciated.
TIA

I had almost the same thing with ds2. Was the day I turned 12wks, went to bed, got up to go to the toilet and loads of blood, was convinced we'd lost him. Had a scan next day and there he was!

I then bled on and off until 16weeks. Was very scary every time, but 4 more scans later still no idea why the bleeds occured but it stopped. Rest of pregnancy continued fine and ds2 is now 7 Grin

I know it's worrying but hope this will reassure you a bit Smile

It does reassure me, thank you. I am hoping things ease up and everything goes well, its taken two years to get pregnant this time around.
Will be having an early night tonight, so tired from being in the hospital, they kept a needle in my arm but it was right on the crease of my arm so I couldn't get comfortable through the night. The hospital were excellent though.

I had a BIG bleed at 11 weeks - running down both legs. Not clotty, bright red and some cramps but no proper pain. Went to A&E and they said the cervix was closed and they didn't know what caused it. I then had a brownish loss for about the next 10 days. I already knew we were having twins, and I'm now 28 weeks and everything is fine! Hope you're ok, it's v v scary!

I am resting at home today. I am wearing pads but there isn't any blood on them when I go to the loo, but blood when I go to the loo and wipe.
Going to ring the midwife today to update her with what happened, DH had spoken to one of the midwife team on Saturday night when the blood started, so will let them know what happened between then and now. I have a note to give to the GP which I'll drop off in the next few days, not really doing anything much until later today when I need to pick DD up from the CM (parents dropped her off this morning).

It is reassuring to read of people who have had bleeds and that it isnt always bad news, and to get some sort of idea what I can expect over the next few days/weeks.

I had very heavy bleeds at 6, 9, 14 and 16 weeks. It's terrifying, so sending you my love. It got to the point where I was terrified to even go to the toilet. I was in and out of epu for scans and thankfully every time my baby was fine... Everything you are describing I went through. They found the area causing the bleeding near the cervix but couldn't say what it was, whether it would stop and they kept telling me some women bleed throughout pregnancy.
My DS is now almost 7 months old and everything was fine... My DH was so traumatised by my pregnancy and having to reassure me and support me that he doesn't want another child, so it looks like my DS will be an only child. So remember as well as being scary for you it's scary for your partner.
Take it easy and try not to worry too much!

Hi there

I am so glad everything was fine for you and baby's heartbeat was beating away.

I had a bleed at 23 weeks with my DS and remember thinking please stay with me another week as its viable at 24 weeks. Rushed in panic to hospital and everything absolutely fine. It was a cervical errosion which can be caused by sex or other factors. The bleeding went away as quickly as it came.

Don't panic, its very common, and its great the scan was done and all was fine.

xxx

DH was knackered yesterday bless him, he'd been asleep upright on and off at the hospital but no real quality sleep.

Oh that reminds me, the one bit of advice we did have from 9 weeks onwards was no sex! But my DH was too frightened of 'hurting the baby' anyway so we didn't throughout my whole pregnancy.

DH and I had sex on the Friday night, have to admit, am a bit terrified at the moment of doing too much or being too energetic.
