Nuchal scan - seperate to dating scan?

my dating scan was at 10+4 (was supposed to be further along)

at my booking in I said I didn't want any tests done.

But I think I've changed my mind.

Im 13 weeks today, if I ring tomorrow do you think they will try to fit me in for a scan?

or will they just tell me to have the blood tests done?

do they usually do the nuchal measurement a the dating scan?

i think at 10+4 I would have to go back anyway as thats too early?

hi, they normally do the nuchal measurement at the 12 week scan and take bloods the same day and then they compare them and you then would receive a letter about a week later with the risks. if the risk is high the midwife contacts you within a few days or if not u just receive the letter.then the 20 week scan they measure everything to make sure he or she is growing well or not. so im not sure whether they will do both or not they may well just take the bloods but i would of thought they would need the nuchal measurement aswell. hope that helps . it has changed since my last baby 4 yrs ago as they only took the measurement of fluid and worked it out with your age and that was your risk.

thanks mummy,

I hope they will, have you had your scan yet?

I dont get the option of a nuchal scan which I was suprised with so just going to have the blood tests so be good to hear how you get on x

i was booked in at 12+6 by LMP for my dating scan, but when they did it they said I was 10+4, so i don't think they could have done the nuchal measurement then anyways!

I had my 1st scan thinking I was 12 but when they did it I was 9+3 so im going back as they said it was to early to do it so I hope they can fit you in.

I think it depends where you're living but in my area you only get the Nuchal scan if you're over 40. If you're under 40 then you have to pay for it yourself.

I think at my 12 week scan I saw her doing the nuchal measurements anyway - I'm sure they would say if they saw any abnormalities.

The other test for Downs offered at 16 weeks is the Quadruple test which tests for more neural abnormalities.

I decided not to have any of the tests but I agree with you, it's a tough decision to make.

Nuchal scan can be done until 13 weeks + 6 days the latest. It is different to the dating scan. The nuchal scan must be done concurrently with the blood test (different to bloods taking at booking). I just had mine this past week, and the doctor was even able to tell me the sex of my baby (I didn't expect this would have been possible it at 12 weeks and it was so surprising and exciting!) Also, it put me more at ease, so I think it was totally worth it... I hope they can see you this week. Good luck!

TotorosOcarina · 31/10/2010 14:31

A midwife has rung me back and told me to call tomorrow at 8:30 as they can only book appointments during the week.

She said I will only be abe to habve it done if theres a cancellation as its usually booked weeks in advance.

fingers crossed then for you x

Am relieved they fit me in but nervous too, I've not had them before but I just 'feel' like i need it this time, I won't act on any info, but i dunno, i just feel like i need to check if that makes sense?

I didn't have the option of a nuchal scan. Well, I presume I didn't as I am now 14 weeks and no one has ever mentioned. Are the quadruple tests bloods done by the community midwife or at the hospital? As it happens I have an appointment with both at 16 weeks, as I am been followed up at the hospital because I have epilepsy. At the moment I don't think I want it done anyway, but I have been wondering for a while.

Totoros, that's great they fit you in. Try to relax and not worry too much. I was extremely worried too, but it all went well and was hugely reassuring, and so exciting to see the baby moving... Wishing the best of luck!

mummyworries · 01/11/2010 18:44

glad they fitted you in xx
