Coughing in Early Pregnancy

Hello all, I have had a nasty cough for a few days now. My tummy feels pulled about and strained from what I think is the coughing. The cough has eased alot now but I am left with the niggly pains which is worrying me.

Would it have done any harm in terms of the pregnancy? I am 6/7 weeks.

Thanks all and sorry for the silly question xxx

I fell quite ill with a terrible cold at 4-5 weeks and was very worried about the fetus... My doctor said everything should be okay as long as I take no medicine and use natural remedies to heal, eg hot water with lemon/honey/ginger, etc. If you get a fever, paracetramol is ok, but stay away from other drugs. Hope you get well soon.

Can't really comment on coughing specifically, but I remember having lots of muscle pain early on whenever I sneezed (which was a lot as it was hayfever season). Other MNers did too and it was generally because muscles were relaxing and less able to stand up to the normal exertions of things like sneezing etc. So it could be that. Took a while for the pains to settle and they still are sore if I turn over in bed without proper 'forward planning'! That was definitely muscle pain though, not cramps or bones or anything more 'serious'.

However, if you think you've done yourself any actual damage or are cramping, speak to your dr/mw just to be sure. It's probably quite unlikely to harm your baby through coughing though, but I did worry about this with my sneezing pains as it was quite a sharp pain.

Not sure if this is helpful, but if it's muscle pain you're experiencing then hopefully this will reassure!

Ah thanks very much. I haven't actually taken anything for it, just been laying around alot drinking water when the tickle starts.

I was more worried that all the coughing would put too much strain on the fetus and push it away. The niggly pains are getting on my nerves.

Thanks very much Deliaskis, it feels very much like muscle pain, not period pain or cramp. All these worries hey! And it will never end...

I had a horrendous cough in early pregnancy from having given up smoking. Cough has now eased and I'm 14 weeks doesn't seem to have done any harm. I did get some cough medicene from the pharmicist that didn't seem to have actual proper drugs in it but just taking it made me feel a little better.
