What do you have to do to get tests/an early scan?

I've had 2 miscarriages - both of which almost physically killed me due to extreme blood loss and cervical shock, both at 10-11 weeks.... and I can only see the midwife in 3 weeks time at 9 weeks and will not get any early tests or scans as "it won't change the outcome if you are going to miscarry, and it saves NHS time".

I am so beyond angry that I am alternately eating icecream and crying...

All I want is to get a scan at 8-9 weeks to see if there is a heartbeat, and check I don't have clotting problems.

Oh yes - she said as well that they only do tests after 3 miscarriages - 2 is "just bad luck". I could have slapped her...

I think you should delay by a week, at 5+4 it might well be too early to see anything, so it would actually do the opposite of reassuring you.
Best of luck!

hmmm or will they get cross that I'm messing them around!

I can't imagine they'd be cross with you about it, I just think it will stress you out even more if they can't see a heartbeat, even if you go in telling yourself that you might not.

I had an early scan with my current pregnancy where they couldn't see hb and walked out in tears, even though they said it was probably just too early an all looked as good as it could, it was a horrible week's wait! All fine in the end though, thankfully.

if they can't tell for sure, won't they ask you to come back a couple of weeks later?

Why do you think you'll only be 5+4 instead of 6+5 is that due to cycle length?

It's really difficult to gauge going on when you might have conceived... I still can't work out how my scan dates pretty much match the date given by my LMP when I think I conceived very early in the month!

Sorry if I have the wrong end of the stick

I think you should go and "get in the system".

If they can't see anything yet they will arrange for you to come back.

Sofa - if you are near Bath the EPU there is self refferal from 8-9 daily but you need to get there by 7.30 to get avoid a huge queue.

We had ypou private scans (nuchal and 4d) done at the spire clinic in bristol.

If I was you I would go on Friday if you can get to an EPU but would postpone to closer to 7 weeks if you can hold out that long

SofaKitten · 28/10/2010 15:20

Postponed to 7 weeks although my OH thinks I'm daft.. Grin

I've been charting which is why I think I know when I ovulate. Also have a 5-6 week cycle not 4.

They were very nice on the phone (when I finally got through) and agreed that 7 weeks would be better as this is just a "reassurance scan".

They are soooooo nice there I just can't describe [over-emotional icon]!

My OH reminded me that the EPU did say to call them for early scans next time I got pregnant - but I don't think I really took in what they were saying.

Thanks for all the advice people!

Ah, that's good - pleased to hear you have an understanding EPU. I always think it must be a very difficult job to do.

Best of luck for your scan sofakitten :)
