I weighed myself yesterday at 18 weeks, & if accurate I reckon I've put on about 8lbs so far... is this normal - I'm not sure what the guidelines are for early on, only that its ablout 1 lb week from now on? thanks a

It depends on what your pre-pregnancy BMI was - if you were overweight, then you should put on less in pregnancy to be healthy, but if you were underweight, you'll need to put on more.

I find this calculator handy as it works it all out for you and gives you the healthy range worked out from your personal stats:

I was wondering about this... I'm 16 weeks and still a couple of pounds less than my pre-pregnancy weight (lost about 7 pounds in 1st trimester) I am overweight anyway (size 16 usually) so wondering if it's anything to worry about or not.

I am 18 weeks and so far I haven't put on any weight, but I was overweight before I got pregnant (size 18) so the less I put on the better.

I think that if you were a healthy BMI before pregnancy, then to have put on 8lbs so far is absolutely fine.

Lucie - no don't worry, as long as you are managing to eat properly now and are getting the nutrients you need then you'll be fine :)

Lucielooo I'm in a similar boat. I'm 17 weeks, was slightly overweight before getting pregnant and have only gained a tiny bit of weight since getting pregnant.

I'm pretty pleased with this but I do occasionally wonder what is 'standard'.

I'm a 12 usually about 10 st, so guess thats ok?
was lucky in that I escaped sickness, but ate like a beast for the first 3 months!!

its different for everyone i suppose and id say each pregnancys different 2. with my last id put on about a stone at 21 weeks, this time im cuming upto 16 weeks and have lost around a stone in pregnancy and im only a size 6 now as i was a size 8 pre pregnancy. id say 8 pound was a healthy gain oggy

lucielooo · 25/10/2010 15:47

Looking at that link oggy, your weight gain looks fine.

It's all very mysterious - not gaining much weight is really not a problem I usually have I expect it all evens out over the 40 weeks so I can look forward to some ballooning in a few weeks.

Baby doubles in size between 16 and 19 weeks (I think) so 8lbs definitely sounds reasonable for 18 weeks

lilly13 · 25/10/2010 16:45

I read in a few pregnancy books that as a general guide one should try to not eat more than 200-300 calories per day more than pre-pregnancy. That's probably easier to monitor rather than figuring out what one should be gaining per week...

Applemuncher · 25/10/2010 19:39

I put on 11lbs in the first 12 weeks, was really worried about it but the midwife sais that people who put on lots of weight at the start of the pregnancy tend to slow down with the weight gain towards the end.

I'm fine with that to be honest - the first 14 weeks I ended up eating for England - anything unhealthy for some reason anything healthy made me heave.

I think you just need to eat healthy when you can and keep asking midwife if you're alright with tha gain.
