Psoriasis and Pregnancy

Hi All,

My DH and I recently had a positive stick test and are due to visit the GP for confirmation, etc. :)

However, my query is if there is anyone that has Psoriasis and how they coped during pregnancy.

It appears at mo that my skin seems quite setteld and not thickening up and doesn't seem as red.

Thanks in advance. Nic x

I don't know what actual research there may have been (perhaps your dermatologist might know?), but my psoriasis was a huge amount better during pregnancy and bf-ing and the midwives told me that that was a common occurrence.

Congrats, and hope it all goes smoothly.

mooncupflowethover · 24/10/2010 17:12

My psoriasis cleared completely with each pregnancy, it was amazing!!! It's very common.

Unfortunately it comes back a month or so after giving birth Sad

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 24/10/2010 17:14

My psoriasis almost completely disappeared during pregnancy. I think because I was seriously looking after myself - no booze, ate really well, got lots of rest...

congratulations by the way!!!!

Hi onimolap,

Thanks for your reply, its good to know that the midwives believe its a common occurrence.

My ex boss told me once that his wife had until she had their first baby and then it completely disappeared and didnt come back.

I will definately quiz my dermatologist about it, as my GP said if I need to I can use steriod cream after 3 months. The only part of my body I'm sort of struggling with at mo is the creases of my body (ie: under boobs, groin, pits, etc) (Sorry TMI, lol). I can't use my normal non-steroid ointment (curatoderm) as there hasn't been any tests done on it. So my doc put a call in to a medical centre to check.

Thanks Nic x

You could try a general cream to ease chafing: 8 hour cream if you're flush, or try Kamilosan (nipple cream!) or Nivea or whatever helps you - at least until the prescription is sorted out. IIRC, Betnovate is safe.

Mine did return, but at what I think of as background level . I no longer use prescription creams/ointments and haven't had a significant flare up in ages. DCs are scale-free (so far, touch wood).

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 24/10/2010 19:28

Get some diprobase from your GP for an amazing completely safe all round mega moisturiser.

That is what I was given when my psoriasis was really bad to use to calm down the bad areas in between steroid creams. It is fantastic used on its own, without steroid creams and has the added side bonus that I can use it on my children who have inherited my and DH's crap skin!!!!

congrats! In my first pregnancy my skin cleared up over the course of the pregnancy (I had a brief flare up towards the end of the first trimester) and I was clear by the time I gave birth. It stayed clearish until I stopped breastfeeding, at which point it came back with a vengence, but don't worry about that now, you'll have plenty of other stuff to think about then!
My 2nd pregnancy now, week 15 and it is still here but not as bad. I'm hoping it will clear again.
I find it really interesting that your doctor told you to hold off on steroids for the 1st trimester - mine told me it was ok throughout. I don't like using them tho.

MrsHypDip · 24/10/2010 19:47

Another one here where it cleared up completely whilst I was pregnant! Congratulations!

NewMumToBe2021 · 08/08/2020 10:31

Sorry reviving an old thread to see if anyone else suffers or has suffered with it.

I’d got rid of my psoriasis few months before getting pregnant.

Now pregnant and at 7wks got a huge attack of it. Whereas I’ve read others it clears up for them during pregnancy.

Don’t yet know if I’m expecting a boy or girl. Wondering if there’s any correlation between what gender your having and if relative to that you suffer worse with psoriasis during pregnancy or it eases up

Maidmummy · 09/08/2020 08:51

There's no correlation between the sex of baby and it clearing up, mine cleared up in my first pregnancy with my daughter, it only came back slightly after she was born but cleared up again in my next 2 pregnancies and they were both boys, now pregnant with number 4 another boy and it's still clear at the moment.

Your hormones are all over the place at the minute with being newly pregnant so maybe that's caused the attack, maybe once they've settled down a little it might start clearing up x

Dyra · 09/08/2020 09:09

Sorry you've had a flare up. I don't think there's any correlation between the sex of the baby and a flare up. My mum's, sister's and my own psoriasis all cleared up with our pregnancies. We have 4 girls and 3 boys between us.

On an aside note, mine is starting to get worse again now we're slowing down breastfeeding.

Gerdticker · 09/08/2020 09:11

Mine was significantly better after first pregnancy

In my second pregnancy, I had crazy dry skin all over in the first trimester, I literally shed everything like a snake - gross!

Now 28 weeks and it’s calmed down again, I just have a tiny patch on my ankle

Hormones fluctuate so much over the different stages of pregnancy so hopefully you’ll find it improves.

You’ll also find you need to massively up the amount of water you drink X

LASandOtto · 09/08/2020 09:38

I've suffered with psoriasis from birth and mine hasn't improved during pregnancy, I'm now in the third trimester. I've stayed away from my usual steroid creams because I know I couldn't use them and just tried to keep moisturises and get some sun on it, but it hasn't helped massively.
Usually I'd have been home in Spain where the combination of sea and sunlight usually gets rid of it for some time too but that hasn't happened either due to COVID.

Amanda2125789 · 09/08/2020 10:47

I never had steroid creams before given by GP/ dermatologist as I got tired of the long waits so in the last ten years of my life of having flare up as it wasn’t super bad (and I tanned in the past) I could camouflage it.
Now with this first pregnancy and in my first trimester and having such a huge attack of it the GP processed everything so surprisingly quickly. Within day’s had dermatologist opinion etc. And they prescribed a steroid cream which they said they believe the risk to be minor compared to how it will help me feel. Front what I can see on the label it’s 5 days worth and then she checks in with me to see how it’s helped. I first used it last night.
So I think they’re looking at it as not so bad to use these days?

Amanda2125789 · 09/08/2020 10:49

So maybe go to your doctor new mum to be and get a cream if these days they’re not deemed as dangerous during pregnancy. It seems for some pregnancy makes things worse on the psoriasis front and for some it clears up (lucky!)

I have psoriasis. The "stuff" on my elbow has been difficult get under control. Well, not any more. Dermalmd Psoriasis Serum is a godsend. Works on all those tough areas of psoriasis. Over the past couple of weeks all spots are clearing up. I'm thrilled!
