Hi, I am 16 weeks pregnant. Last wednesday I decided to give my downstairs a bit of a trim lol and for some of it used a razor. A day later I found a spot on my right outer labia which was a bit tender to touch and I assumed it was a shaving spot so I gave it a bit of a squeeze. A day later I had a sore bit on my mouth which I thought was going to turn into a coldsore (I get them quite a lot) but it disappeared and I thought hubby had just nipped it a bit when he was kissing me lol. Its still there today only flat (not like a spot iykwim) its not sore unless I touch it, or itchy or anything. Do you think I may have a coldsore down there? I am trying to think if I have ever had one there before, maybe I have but just thought o its a spot from shaving or something?
Hubby has no symptoms.
I know coldsores are dangerous if I have never had one before and get one when I'm pregnant, but what about if I have had them for years and now have one down there? Does that mean my baby will be okay coz i already have antibodies? I am worried, please help!

I think your best bet is to talk to your midwife (difficult I know!). She should know all the info you'll need, if not go to the doc's.

I know herpes can be dangerous if you're pregnant and it is your first outbreak. If you've never had one on your labia (or any other part of your genitals) you should really get it checked out to see if that's what it actually is.

From your description it doesn't sound like herpes, I have to say. I get coldsores 'down there' and they bloody hurt!!

Don't panic, talk to your midwife (I told mine about it and she was lovely) and I'm sure she'll put your mind at rest.

Thanks, I am going to the doctor tomorrow. I am hoping its not a coldsore there, coz it doesnt overly hurt, I'm hoping it maybe just hurts the little that it does coz I squeezed it and probably infected it lol!!
I read that it shouldnt be dangerous even if it is a first attack on the genitals, as I would already have the antibodies from getting them on my face? Its only dangerous if you have had no coldsores anywhere at all before?
Thanks for your reply :)

Herpes isn't dangerous during pregnancy, so don't worry about that. The only danger is that it can affect your baby if you have an outbreak down there at the time when you give birth.

Does your DH have coldsores too? The mouth and the genital virus are basically the same thing, so he could have spread it down there - sorry.

If you do have Herpes, there are antivirals the docs can give you to try to prevent an outbreak when you're due. Unfortunately, if you do have an outbreak when you're due, you'll have to have a caesarean, but it's not the worst thing that could happen.

Hope that helps.

They test for various STIs at your booking in appointment and herpes may well be one of them.

I'd echo previous posters, unless you have an outbreak down there at the time of birth it's not necessarily a problem even if you do have it.

I wouldn't worry unduly though.

The extra hair growth I've experienced while pg (am 17 weeks today) means I've had a couple of ingrown hairs in my armpit (I know, attractive). If you shave down there, it could just be that.

I'm 18 weeks pregnant and developed a coldsore on my lip last week. I saw my GP and he reassured me that it wasn't dangerous and prescribed an Antiviral cream to use 5 times a day. I read the leaflet that came with the cream and it said it could also be used for genital herpes, so my guess he will just give you something similar to use on both areas.
You have plenty of time to get things cleared up before the birth so try not to worry.

Thanks, went and saw the doc today, and he had a quick look and said that he didnt think it as herpes, but to keep an eye on it and if it comes back again I was to go back. He said that with me also having coldsores for years it wont harm the baby as I will already have the antibodies to pass on through the placenta. I have a mw appointment on thursday so I will mention it to her just in case. I am worried incase it can cause a miscarriage or something????

actually, I'm just wondering...i had a really itch bit on my bum cheek lol (tmi) and I asked hubby to have a look. He counted 6 bites on my lower back/bum/back of thighs, and inspected the cat...and found a FLEA!!! So maybe this spot on my bits is a flea bite?? How minging! What do you think?

Don't know about the fleas (!) but, as I said before, Herpes does NOT endanger the baby in the womb or raise a risk of miscarriage or any other complications prior to birth. Do check this with your midwife if you're still worried.

bettywobble · 26/10/2010 11:24

I will. It jut the doc said he didnt think it was herpes. And I appear to have lots of flea bites on me . great.
