Chicken pox question - please help!

My friend just rang me, she is in her first trimester, her DS is around 21 months old and he has got chicken pox. She can't remember if she has had it or not - rang me and my Mum as we grew up together and may remember - we can't!

So, what if she HASN'T had CP??? (which is looking likely at this stage!). I know she can get tested, but what if she isn't immune?

Was she not tested in her first pregnancy? In the area I live they routinely screen for immunity in pregnancy.

Call the community midwife and they can come and take blood from her at home to check for immunity and to prevent infection spreading...

I'd get to a docs ASAP.

I wasn't screened and got it after baby was born luckily.

There is medicine she can take which will help her fight it if she gets it I think.

The sooner the better. So GP appt tomorrow, they'll squeeze her in as priority i would think.

As I understand it, chickenpox is only a problem in the last trimester as it can be passed on during delivery. This is what I was told as I didn't know if I had had it (had a test to find out and I had so didn't need to follow up.)

Interestingly - and reassuringly it says that CP is NOT associated with increased risk of early miscarriage but it can cause defects in the baby - in a small number of cases.

Thanks everybody, she is going straight to the gp tomorrow and having a test done to find out... What would we do without mn!!
