Anyone recommend somewhere to buy a maternity coat that doesn't cost the earth?

I didn't get a specific maternity coat but I did get a cape last month from Sainsbury's (TU).

Good news for us is that capes are in fashion this year, so there are plenty about and they cover the bump nicely (even though mine is cheapo Sainsbury's i've seen in in lots of mags including Grazia). It cost me about £40 and I get lots of compliments on it from non-pregnant women (who are the best people to get complements off IMO).

I thought about getting a maternity one, but I just couldn't justify the expense for a couple of months usage.

Deliaskis · 19/10/2010 13:37

I was recommended this one by a fellow mnetter www.next.co.uk/shopping/women/maternity/26/%203

Am ordering soonish I think!

I did spot that Next one and was my fav out of what I have managed to find.

Cape is a good idea too!

I'd also reccomend ebay for a 2nd hand maternity coat. there aren't loads going but at least they're cheaper than new and often in pretty good nick as people don't wear them for long.

bunnymother · 19/10/2010 16:29

I bought the French Connection Lark coat (search on eBay as its a 2009 model), which isn't a maternity coat but is v roomy. Have been v happy w it. Its 100% wool and I got mine for £70.

Scaltini · 19/10/2010 16:47

I have a selection of coats at home to choose between at the mo - gotta love online shopping!! The grey hooded one from Next (not sure) and two capes from DP - they are very roomy - I am enormous at 31 weeks and I reckon they will see me through to the end.

CTJ82 - Is yours the orangey/mustard cape from Sainsbury's? I can't find one in stock anywhere!!! [henvy]

RayeB · 19/10/2010 17:30

I bought one from jojomaman bebe last week - it's really nice and warm. Was £59 and would look good with jeans or work stuff, it's grey boucle.

MissCKitty · 19/10/2010 20:19

Not a maternity coat but I bought a lovely military style coat from Asda for £18. I just bought it in a bid size to account for bumo growth.

MissCKitty · 19/10/2010 21:01

oooops big not bid doh! Baby brain [hgrin]

sotough · 19/10/2010 21:15

i am 27 weeks pregnant, and have just bought this www.newlook.com/shop/womens/jackets-and-coats/snood-belted-coat_198108514 on total impulse from New Look.
i was freezing cold, and fed up of wearing a trench coat i can't do up! spotted it on a rack, tried it on, and thought it looked good and felt cosy. couldn't see the point of spending a lot of money on a coat i'll only be wearing for three months...
I have never bought anything from New Look before as i tend to go for more expensive/better quality stuff, but i am soooo pleased with it. it's obviously not a maternity coat but i just bought a size 14 and it lies very nicely over my bump. i don't bother with the belt.

BleedyGonzalez · 19/10/2010 21:18

I have one to sell! What size are you? Mine's about a 10-12. It's black, a sort of 1950s vaguely 'swing' style belted 100% wool coat, cost me £100 from Seraphine. 1 button missing.

BleedyGonzalez · 19/10/2010 21:20

Like this only in black and with a matching belt, not a leather-look one. Lovely purple lining.

yummytummy · 19/10/2010 21:24

hi sorry to jump into thread but i have been looking for mat coat for ages. is yours still available bleedygonzalez? how much did you want for it and is anyone else interested. am usually size 12. is it a biggish 10-12?

BleedyGonzalez · 19/10/2010 21:53

Yes, yummy, it's still available! It's a size 2 in Seraphine sizes - it's a French company so their clothes come up slightly small. So it's probably more like a 10, if I'm honest.

That said, when pregnant I was the size of a woolly mammoth and it covered everything. Is this your first baby, yummy, or do you have any idea whether you're heading for a large or small bump? If you think small, this coat should fit you fine. If you think you'll be mahoosive, don't buy it from me! Grin

It's in great nick - apart from the missing button one of the threads on the lining has unravelled just a teeny bit, which doesn't make a difference to anything unless you're expecting military inspections. I haven't dry-cleaned it yet (sorry, too busy looking after baby!) but will do so. It cost me £95 so I'd say £50 plus p&p.

Don't know why I couldn't find the coat on the website earlier; it's here. Huge apols - tis 60% wool, 40% poly. Lovely and soft, and v cosy to wear.

Applemuncher · 19/10/2010 23:01

I got my lovely Mum to make me a cape! I just picked it up tonight and it's FABULOUS!! Smile

MrsWajs · 20/10/2010 02:46

Am also opting for the cape idea :)

MuffinMouse · 20/10/2010 06:47

This is DC3 for me, and I am enormous already (and only 13 weeks). I can just about get my usual coat on, so I have succumbed and bought a maternity coat. I will be wearing it for a good five months, I reckon. I bought it from JoJoMamanBeBe; it was about £69 but I found a discount voucher online which took £10 off. I wish I could get away with a non maternity version, but I will never fit in one. (Sigh). Just bought maternity jeans and work trousers! Probably will need them in the next fortnight.

Bex29 · 20/10/2010 14:08

I've just ordered this one this morning from New Look, it's reduced to £31.99 and free delivery if you order up till midnight tonight. I didn't think it was too bad a price compared to other's I've seen and will sell on ebay once I'm done with it.

yummytummy · 20/10/2010 14:09

hi bleedygonzalez, maybe it will be a bit small then. am a good size 12 and growing! also 2nd baby so def a bit bigger earlier than before. damn. it looked lovely as well! am really having trouble finding a coat. ordered one from more4mums but was huge so returned it. and the grey next one is out of stock and they dont know when will be in! aaargh am freezing as no coats do up! am getting desperate now. any more ideas anyone?

BleedyGonzalez · 20/10/2010 20:45

No probs yummy, and good luck! Grin

lowra · 20/10/2010 20:59

My mum bought me a lovely camel cape from topshop and I love it!

MimsyRogers · 20/10/2010 21:20

I was just thinking of putting my winter maternity coat from Gap on ebay. I think it cost about £75 new. It's black size M and it's been dry cleaned. Are you interested yummytummy? I'm a size 12 and it worked for me all the way through my pregnancy. It's double breasted and 3/4 ish length. You can make me an offer if you like!

CTJ82 · 21/10/2010 10:09

SCALTINI - mine is a camel coloured one, though i think they may do other colours - not sure.
My local Sainsbury's didn't stock the cape, I found it at one of their bigger stores.
Sorry if this doesn't help much! x
