Small amount of bleeding in pregnancy

I woke up this morning and there was some blood in my knickers, not a huge amount but more than spotting. I'm 9 weeks pregnant. Should I call NHS Direct or just wait to see if more happens?

I wouldn't call NHS direct as they tend to err on the side of caution and have frightened me half to death on a number of occasions! I'd call you EPU and see what they say. Some EPUs are walk in.... The one near me insists you see a gp first to get referred. If you have no pain and there's not alot of blood, I'd try not to worry. I appreciate that's easier said than done and I know I'd be worried. The reality is, it may be a MC but many women bleed slightly in early PG, including myself. Alot of people say if it's brown it's ok but worry if it's red... Well IME i bled once a week, every week from 7 to 12 weeks and although there wasn't much, it was bright red, fresh blood. Drs could never say where it was coming from but I'm now 38 weeks pg so the bleeding obviously didn't effect baby at all. Good luck... Let us know how you get on

i heard if its red dont worry coz it means its fresh blood? Anyway please done worry - i had bleeding from about 8 weeks then again at 11, then again 13 etc and apparently it was my cervix that had a erosion on it that kept bleeding (like when u get a cut and it starts to heel but u knock it again), anyway a few weeks later i got told i also had an infection and got given anti-biotics and never had bleeding since.
My bleeding use to be more than spotting but then suddenly it'd stop then a bit later it'd start again,i never had no pains with the bleeding either. Best thing to do is to phone your antinatal ward at hospital and speak to a midwife who might want to check you over.

Thanks, I did somemore internet research and it all screamed CALL SOMEONE FOR ANY BLEEDING! So I called the out of hours GP and she said it was worrying but the hospital wouldn't have anyone in as it was Sunday, so stay at home and rest (very easy with a 22 month old!). If the bleeding gets worse or there is any pain then get to A&E immediately. I did then call the nearest EPU on excited's advice but no one picked up the phone, so not sure if they are working today.

The blood is kind of orange I think..I'm going to try not going to worry anyway, there was only a small amount, none since then.

Nooooo! DO NOT go near the Internet! It will all say that bleeding is awful and you are miscarrying. I did this and it drove me insane and convinced me I was miscarrying. The info is not designed for you specifically in mind... I'd wait and speak to a doctor who can tell you what's happening to you specifically. As I said, the internet always said that bright red blood was bad and seek medical attention right away... In my case, that was not the case. All was well and I've spoken to a few other women who have had exactly the same type of bleeding in early pg. It's more common than you think. X

How heavy and what colour is the blood? No pain sometimes means nothing, I had a mc on Friday and had no pain. BUT I did have heavy gushes of blood and huge clots.

banana - it was about the size of a 2 pence piece, not a lot at all really. It was sort of orange which looked like it was either brown blood, that there was so little of that it went lighter, or red blood that has dried an orange colour if that makes sense. No pain but the past 3 days my stomache has been aching a bit, I assumed it was just growing or something.

Don't worry too much then. You can tell your GP and they will refer you to EPU for a scan just to make sure but I am sure it was just implantation or old blood. In most cases, it usually is :)

Well, because my partner is convinced I am having twins, he has been reading about twins.
And apparently because of early scans it has been seen that twins are more common than previously thought, but often around 8 -11 weeks one will be reabsorbed, which causes a small amount of bleeding.

I have no idea if this is true, just what he told me last night.

i agree dont go near the internet for advice! (expect here of course), i had a blood cyst which they picked up on the 1st scan, told me not to worry it'll prob go on its own. I googled it later just out of curisoity(like u do) and it said if its undetected it can cause the mother to bleed to death in labour and allsorts so i was panicking then til my next scan! They didnt even mention it and i asked if it'd gone and they said well theres only a baby so yep! If you get anymore bleeding then ring epu again but from what u said 2p size doesnt sound alot, with my bleeding the toilet was filled with bright red blood (sorry tmi) and then would it would just stop and be completely gone!

I spotted pink at five weeks and epu scanned and food heartbeat. Then bright and dark red with clot at 7 weeks and enough to male us go to casulty (not just spots - more like a medium heavy period). It had stopped by the time we got to casualty. They booked us in for scan the next day because it was a weekend and at scan all fine and they said normal to bleed when placenta forming but also said we were right to get it checked out. Am now 32 weeks.
