HCG Levels

Hi all

I am concerned and wanted some advice.

I had some very very light pink streaks within discharge on Monday and went to doctor who referred me to EPU for Tuesday. They did my HCG Levels and they were 1,616. They also did a scan and saw what would appear to be gestational sac. I would only have been 4+6 on Tuesday and sonographer said she would only have expected to see the gestational sac present for my dates but still noted scan as inconclusive.

I went back for another blood test yesterday (48 hours) and HCG Levels were 2,737. Doctor said they haven't quite doubled but is happy. I have another scan not next Tuesday but week after where I will be 6+6.

I am worried about the fact that the HCG Levels did not double and wondered if anyone had any advice for me to believe the doctor!

Also wanted to say that I have no pregnancy symptoms apart from veiny boobs. They did hurt alot more last week but that has subsided and wondered if thats normal too.

Thanks very much xx (5+2)

From what I read on the internet when I had a mc, the levels of HCG vary massively from person to person - there is a range between x and x for each stage which is completely normal.

I was in a similar situation to you with the discharge, except I never had the second blood test as I had already started bleeding properly within the 48 hours and then a scan showed there was nothing there. My boobs had gone back to normal and the nausea I had just started feeling, stopped. At 5 weeks though you wouldn't have many symptoms at all. I was 7 weeks.

I think if you were miscarrying there is no way the HCG levels would have risen as much as they did, so good luck!

Thank you Domestic. I am sorry to hear of your mc. Its a worrying time hey.

I did look up HCG levels on internet, i'm just worried that they didn't double.

I think the next week and half will drag and I'm dreading going in and being told there is nothing there.

I have no blood or pains anymore so I'm hoping thats a good sign although I have read so many stories of mmc.

Worried, worried, worried!

Yes, it is a very worrying time. You just need to think that it is more likely to be OK than not. Hopefully you will start feeling sick shortly (although my sickness didn't really start til 7 weeks). And you have had no more blood since Monday, which is a v good sign. Hope all goes well.

Bump! Anymore more advice? xx

Hi, try not to worry to much your levels seem good to me. Its easier said than done i know, i was a nervous wreck when i was having mine done over the course of 2 weeks.

I asked the nurse about my levels as at one point they just doubled. She said they say 'double' as its easier to calculate.

Also i think that once they go over a certain amount, it could be over 1000, that they don't expect it to double every 48 hours, i think more every 72 hours.

serendipity16 · 16/10/2010 19:08

Just found this on google -

For HCG levels 6,000mIU/ml, the expected doubling time is >96 hours.

endlesslove · 17/10/2010 12:35

Hey thank you serendipity. So much help to put mind at rest.

I'm now just so worried as i have no sypmtoms whatsoever and boobs don't even hurt anymore. They are veiny but when I first found out I was pregnant they really did hurt and now they don't. Do you think that can happen once your body accepts you are pregnant?

I have to wait until Tuesday of next week to find out if all ok and time just seems to have stopped!

xx

Your welcome Smile

I was seen at the epu every week from just before i was 4wks until i was just over 12wks.
Over one weekend when i was about 8wk or so my nausea just vanished. Before that i had felt so sick all day everyday. I was so stressed out thinking something was wrong. I went for my scan on the tuesday thinking the worst but baby was just fine....... and a day or two later my nausea returned & stayed until i was about 14wks.

Remember every pregnancy is different & symptoms can come & go & some may last weeks, others a few days.

This is my 6th pregnancy & the nausea this time lasted a lot longer than the other pregnancies. My other pregnancies, the nausea would only last 2 weeks. I had bad SPD in a few of my pregnancies, starting as early as 12wks..... nothing at all so far this time & i'm 28wks.

Try not to worry about your pregnancy symptoms. I know that you have quite a long wait until your next scan but think positive & i hope & pray your little baby is just fine.

Please update us when you've had your scan xxx

Hi again, just thought i'd update you from my hospital appointment yesterday...

I had scan and the gestational sac has grown and a yolk sac is now present. However, no fetal pole as yet and I have to go back for another scan in two weeks. I had HCG Levels done again and they were 21,500ish.

I am slightly concerned though as the sonographer said that by measurements she would say I was 5+6 yesterday but by my dates I was 6+6. So they are measuring me a week behind.

(At my scan two weeks ago the sonographer said from measurements I was 4+3, however my dates were 4+6. So that to me would mean the two sonographers have differed in dates.)

Can early scans differ quite alot in terms of baby growing at different rates, have growth spurts etc. I am concerned that baby isn't growing quick enough if going by my dates?

Thought I may add that I had a 5 week scan with my DS and there was a yolk sac and at 7 weeks there was a 14mm baby so taking this into consideration as well they should have seen the start of a fetal pole if going by my dates of 6+6.

My dates are going by when Clearblue Fertility Monitor stated I ovulated and after using for a year I always came on period exactly 13 days after ovulation so I would presume this is quite accurate.

Confused.com! Please help! Thank you so much. x

Thats great that the sac has grown & theres a yolk sac now.

Early scans are a nightmare.
I've had so many of them & on one hand i want to know & see whats going on but on the other hand they lead to so much stress.

A day or two can make a lot of difference when it comes to early scans.

With one of my children i had a scan & the baby measured something like 7 weeks. A week later i went back & my baby measured something like 7+2. I freaked out & got upset & worried. The sonographer said that sometimes its hard to get a proper measurement. I went back a week later & baby was right on track.

I think with all my pregnancies where i've had early scans, my dates have never matched when the sonographer measures.
I've always been sure of my dates & have gone there knowing i was 6+4 weeks only to be told it was only measuring 5+4.

I know you'll worry but try not too worry too much, everything seems to indicate that your baby will be just fine x

endlesslove · 27/10/2010 18:44

Hey thank you for your reply. I am so worried and I cannot seem to concentrate on anything. Its reassuring to see that sonographers have told you different things too.

Will keep you posted in what seems like an eternity! xxx
