Hi, my 17 year old daughter is 25 weeks pregnant and as yet has not gained any weight she still only weighs 8 stone the midwife does not seem worried by this. I am though. Also she has been having night cramps the dr says this is due to lack of calcium.. I have spoken to her but she is still a teenager and her diet is ok but not great. she does eat lots of cheese and dairy products. is this ok do you think?

My doctor says that the fetus is like a "parasite" (I surely wouldn't want to refer to my baby in this manner), but the point he makes is that the fetus would take whatever it needs from the mother. It has been this way for centuries when the human race experienced severe food shortages. Obviously, it would be tremndously helpful for your daughter to work out and stick to a balanced diet plan, however, it not considered any longer necessary to "eat for 2" as it was during my mom's and grandmother's pregnancy times... How much she should gain during pregnancy should be pivoted off her intial BMI. Try to calculate was it was. On another thread on the weight topic, I posted a matrix as to what most pregnancy books recommend one should gain during pregnancy in accordance to one's intial BMI. Let me know if you don't find it and I'll resend it to you.
