Can someone explain why I need disposable knickers please?

I'm 36 weeks and just starting to think about my hospital bag. Lots of the lists of recommended items I have seen mention disposable pants. Can anyone explain why I would need them? Wouldn't my normal knickers be okay with maternity pads?

Any other tips on things to pack that don't usually get mentioned would be much appreciated too.

Just buy massive (and I mean MASSIVE) cheap pants. In BLACK. And try an dget pads not backed in plastic. Kotex were the best I found last time, really long and cushiony. Anything with 'maternity' on the packet will cost you double.
Flip flops for the shower. The bathrooms weren't a place I'd want to be barefoot to be honest.

They say disposable because of a fairly high chance you may leak and rather than destroy your nice knickers, have ones you don't mind getting rid of.

Would probably say buy biggish knickers from Peacocks/ cheapie place so you can chuck them and not feel bad.

there will be lots of blood and they will prbably get stained. that said, don't bother with disposables, just get ones you don't mind chucking (eg cheapie ones). And big.

Its so you dont ruin your normal pants, there is rather alot of stuff comes out of you with a VB, and you will need 2 pads in aswell. x

I think its because the blood loss is quite significant after delivery (mine actually was relatively light) but you don't want to ruin any knick-knocks that you have. I got massive granny pants that I didn't mind chucking out. Will be getting them again this time but in black!! Also the pads you need are huuuuge so you need something sizeable for them to grab onto

Just go to Primarni and get a pack or 2 of their black granny pants in mahoosive sizes.

I'm a 12/14 and got them in a 18/20 and they were so comfy. I was still wearing one pair of them 6 months after giving birth .

Things I forgot.......... everything I needed for ME!! I was so worried about not having stuff fot the baby, that i completely forgot my stuff! eg hairbrush, mirror, make up, Bra!! Pajamas!! and I had to stay in for a week...........cue lots of phonecalls home with lists of what to bring me!

Even with a C-section you'll have a lot of blood loss. Best to have knickers that you rally don't care about and that are comfy

I hated my disposable pants...had em cs and they chafed my scar ....second all the suggestions of cheapo big granny pants!

Didn't realise bleeding was lighter with CS than with VB - anyone know why?

Puss- when they have you open, they tend to clear a lot of the "gunk" out with th eplacenta.so there is less to come out.

Also, if you are in hospital for a couple of days you don't really want to be storing up bloody knickers to take home to wash. It was nice to shove the whole lot in the bin.

Dont skimp on cost for the pads. Get maternity pads - they're softer, even if more expensive than other mega-pads. And if you have sore ladybits regular pads will chafe. You may only need one or two packs before the lochia is light enough for regular pads to contain it.

I used massive incontinence pads for the first day or two. (They look like unpatterned disposable nappies, with the tabs.). Even maternity pads can leak when you're lying down a lot, but these things didn't let a drop escape.

I bought disposable knickers. If you get them buy loads. You will need to change them a few times a day if your loss is heavy and also wear at night. Normal knickers just won't do.
I was glad my friend bought me loads in a box of gifts beforehand - she said I would understand once I became a mam!

Nooooooo, you don't need disposable knickers, very uncomfortable. What you need is a multi pack of cheap "apple catchers" as we affectionately call them - big knickers! Much more comfy

as others have said- don't matter if they are paper or otherwise but you will most likely not be wanting to keep them!

I'd be careful about not buying maternity pads- IME normal type pads just wouldn't have been good enough. Plus the maternity pads provide extra padding/cushioning which I found very welcome as my stitches were so sore.

I just used my old pants that I wanted to get rid of anyway and bought some lovely new ones to put away that I could replace them with once the bleeding stopped. I enjoyed having new knickers to look forward to

I found maternity pads cheaper and more comfortable than normal pads, although must admit I didn't try kotex.

Dry Shampoo. You may not feel like washing your hair in there (showers tend to be a bit rank to say the least) but it'll keep you going til you get home.

I bought disposable knickers when DD was born and they were really uncomfortable IMO. When DS was born I just bought a load of cheap knickers from Asda and then chucked the ones that couldn't be saved!

As long as you don't wear your nicest white knickers I wouldn't worry too much!

I liked the giant 'stomach control' cheapy Pants from Primark as they were comfy even after a cs. They aren't tight at all (like I saod cheap version of spanx) and keep the pads in place.

Herb teas and cup-a-soup, flip flops, sarong in case of a cs. Your own mug .

I brought a straw and a water bottle that I could top up - was very useful, esp as I had a CS and had to lie down, made drinking much easier! And hand cream (I even took in my own hand wash ) as that anti-bac stuff makes your hands really dry.

I also agree with giant pants. I have since become a convert (just not 4 sizes too big...)

I just bought mega thick nappies nighttime pads and didn't leak at all even with a good loss! Had no stitches though..........

its sooo much easier just taking everything off than trying to get a really soaked clotty pad off.

Matalan, 5 pack of high waisters for about £3, 2 of. Def get high ones in case you end up with a section - low waists might rub on the scar. And yes to Kotex or maternity pads, anything else is sweaty, sticky, itchy and unbearable on lacerated nethers. Also pack a couple of pairs of black trackie bottoms (£4 from ASDA).
