Hello everyone,

I just found out on Friday that I am pregnant. Apparently five weeks according to everything I have read so far. I came off the pill in May and whilst we weren't actively "trying" for a baby we obviously always knew it could happen, just didn't expect it to happen quite so quickly!

I have my first docs appointment on Friday and then I don't know what happens after that. Have already been suffering with the wonders of feeling sick and not wanting to eat much as this was one of the symptoms that made me think I may be pregnant. So, other than being terrified and emotional what else should I expect? :o

Looking forward to taking part in the site as much as I can (if I can)

I'd get a good basic book - Miriam Stoppard's one is okay. Or check the NCT info.

Not a lot happens that early tbh, although you do need to get into the midwife system so you can have your booking-in appointment early enough to then book the dating scan.

Hi LDNlady! sounds like you have a june baby. Feel free to come and join us on the june thread in anti-natal clubs. There are lots of first-timers on the thread and we can all be slightly terrified together Grin

Hi there! I felt exactly like you did so can sympathise.. I came off the pill as I thought it might take up to two years to happen, but like you we weren't trying at all, in fact I can even name the date of conception we were having sex that rarely! (poor Husband thinks he's been cheated!!) Anyway, welcome and enjoy it.. don't freak yourself by looking too many things up on the internet - this forum has helped me loads. Now I am five months and slowly getting used to the idea.. it's good to have the 9 months for just that - getting your head around it! Hope the sickness isn't too bad for you. Also my advice about your first midwife's appoinment is not to get too excited about it.. I was expecting much more but really all it involved was filling in forms at giving blood for tests. I felt a bit deflated afterwards as I think I was expecting an excited fanfare from her or something! lol Smile However, your experience may be completely different so good luck x

Congrats lndlady! I find Anne dean's Pregnancy Bible really good. MN is a fantastic resource :-)

Congratulations LDNlady.

MN is one of my most visited sites at the moment (17 weeks pregnant) and it has helped me so much with dealing with the little niggley things. I'd suggest joining your antenatal club thread on here (a previous poster linked it) since it is so wonderful to have lots of other women going through the same thing at the same time. It is also a great source of information of things you might not of even considered.

As for what to expect, I'd say expect morning sickness and if you are one of the lucky 40% of people who do not suffer from it then count it as a blessing. I worried constantly up to my 12 week scan and actually convinced myself that I wasn't pregnant just dying of some mysterious illness that consisted of vomiting and fatigue. Pregnancy tiredness was one thing I was not prepared for.

What happens next with the NHS? Well for me I had my booking appointment at 11 weeks where I gave blood samples for tests and me and my OH filled in a brief family history. I then got a pack of stuff to take away with me and I was told the hospital would contact me for my scan. You are also given your pregnancy notes to look after and take to every appointment. My 12 week scan was done at 13 weeks where I got the results for all the blood tests and saw my blob of a baby for the first time which surprisingly to me actually looked like a baby already. I then had to make a 16 week appointment with my midwife for a check up and where I heard the baby's heart for the first time. Next I'm going for my 20 week scan when I'll be 20+5 then I'll see my midwife again at 25 weeks. I have a schedule in my notes but I don't need to know more than 2 months ahead :) Your midwife should give you all this info when you meet her (assuming her, does anyone have a male midwife?).

Best of luck with your pregnancy!

Hello, congratulations! Really not much happens for a few weeks except that you have morning sickness/nausea/extreme tiredness and it all feels a bit scary and time goes slowly. BUT please know that it does get better, in fact it gets brilliant, and you quickly forget the rubbish bits.

Oh and even though there isn't much contact with your MW or hospital at this point, don't feel neglected. If you do need them they are very good at looking out for you.

Also, don't google anything - come here instead. There is a lot of stuff out there that is written in a much scarier way than is necessary. Oh and remember that everyone's pregnancy is very different and there are no rules in terms of symptoms experienced!

I also had come off the pill but wasn't "trying" to get pregnant. It is a bit of a shock isn't it? I am delighted now to be where we are.

Good luck! x

Thank you all so much for the welcome and calming words. It's all still sinking in so any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated. :)

Going to have a good old trawl around the talk forum and join the June Babies thread too. Look forward to "speaking" to you. x

Congrats LDN! I fell pregnant whilst on the pill (had a stomach bug) and im now 33 weeks pregnant expecting my first :-) Didnt realise I was pregnant until 12 weeks as the pill had kept things regular and I waas putting morning sickness down to continued stomach bug and hangovers! I had my booking appointment and then my dating scan, I think someone has said but when you get your notes at your booking app their is a written list at what to expect at every MW appointment which I found really helpful!
