Stop-Start spotting in early pregnancy?

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I have had brown spotting since before my BFP, coming up to 3 weeks ago. It lasted for 4 days, stopped for 4 days, lasted 9 days, stopped 4 days, and restarted again last night :(

I had a scan last week with a hb, measuring close to 6 weeks (right in line with my dates)...and they saw no reason for the spotting, i.e. nothing coming from the uterus.

Should I be worried or does this just sometimes happen?

Hi banana87

Poor you, this is such a worrying time. Brown spotting is pretty common in early pregnancy and often happens with the pregnancy continuing normally. I had a couple of times when I had spotting early on, and some heavier brown 'blood' at around 8 weeks, which they thought was breakthrough bleeding. I am now 13 weeks and all going well. If it's just brown and you're not getting any cramping then there's a good chance that everything will be ok. The fact that you've had a scan and got a heartbeat is also very positive.

It is tricky as spotting can be a bad sign but there are lot of times when it isn't. If it gets heavier, if you get red blood or cramps then I would go back to the Early Pregnancy Unit. You could also go back in a couple of weeks for reassurance if it continues.

I'm sorry, that's probably not much help but it doesn't mean the worst. After my incident at 8 weeks I confidently told my DH that is was all over, I just KNEW. Then I had to ring him from the hospital to tell him that actually it was all fine!

Good luck.

Thanks JoEW. I know I should be calmer, the same happened with DD from 7 weeks-14 weeks! I just worry as you do after having had 2 MMC's.

Will be going back for a reassurance scan, just wanted to wait til next week, though that may not be possible!

hi banana87 i had exactly the same between 5 - 12 weeks and again at 25, 28, 33...now at nearly 34 so that is the good news! i had a few early scans and they found a heartbeat (a very good sign), which really reassured me.

it was so stressful though, didn't let myself get excited until the 12 week milestone. some drs/midwives i saw were worried about it, others didn't seem concerned at all. Like JoE said, it's crap because it can be a bad sign, but can also be perfectly normal for some women and nothing other than a scan can reassure you!

i would say the same, if you're not having cramps or heavy red bleeding (and keep an eye on your preg signs - my dr said morning sickness was a good sign!) then these are all good things. unfortunately it's a waiting game, but it sounds very positive for you.

Best of luck, I'm sure that everything will be fine. x

Banana - I had brown spotting from weeks 5 - 10 with a pregnancy last year that ended in mc at 15 weeks.

I was pg again 3 months later and had exactly the same thing happen, and even two bright red bleeds too. I was absolutely certain this one was going the same way, but at 12 weeks it just stopped and I'm now 38 weeks Smile due a week on Friday.

There doesn't seem to be any explanation for the spotting, but reading on here it seems to be very very common although it doesn't make you worry any less.

Keeping fingers crossed for you that it all turns out to be fine. xxx

Hi, I hope your feeling better by now. It is so horrible to have all this worry in early pregnancy. I had the same on and off between weeks 5-9 and three bouts of heavy red bleeding. They did see a heamotoma on my scan but there are many reasons for bleeding in my experience the early pregnanacy unit are always happy to scan you again so keep going back if you are worried.

Best of luck with everything

p.s. My daughter is now 10 months old :)

banana87 · 12/10/2010 10:29

Thanks all. It seems to have stopped again. Wondering if its because I lifted DD's pushchair in and out of the car Sunday afternoon. It always seems to follow heavy lifting.

I just had a baby and I was wondering how easy it is to get pregnant after having a baby and how I would know if I was pregnant because I was bleeding like you do when you have a baby then it stopped then it started again and I don't know if I should go to the hospital or not

I am now just over 6 weeks and had some spotting last night for over an hour which turned bright red then stopped. I have spoke to my GP and they have taken my bloods today and want me to go back in 48hours for more blood tests. I am also having to wait until Monday for a scan at the epau and absolutely petrified of the worst 😢 is this at all normal?

My name is Danielle and on December 31st 2017 I took a at home pregnancy test from the dollar store and it was positive so I took another one on January 1st and then took two more on January 2nd and they were all positive also I’m so excited about it words could not express the happiness this has brought me until January 4th 2018 I went out to dinner with my fiancé and I went to the bathroom and when I sipped there was a little bit of blood so of course I went to the emergency room and they took my blood to do some test and a urine test as well and of course I am pregnant and then the blood test came back and my number was only at 42 and they said it should be in the hundreds or the thousands and he told me if it was a normal pregnancy my numbers would be much higher and with mine only being at 42 I’m either about to have a miscarriage or I literally just got pregnant 5 or 6 days ago so he told me to come back in 48 hours and get another blood test done so that night I went home put a pad on and didn’t have any bleeding at all the whole night and then I woke up on January 5th and went to the bathroom and there it was some more blood spotting not a whole lot at all and then I put a pad on and for a few hours I was fine no spotting no blood at all then I went to the bathroom again and there was a dot of blood I even had sex and there was maybe a line at the most of blood I don’t know what is going on I’m praying a miracle will happen for me and this precious gift from god I have wanted this baby for so long and I don’t want to loose this baby at all!!! If it was a miscarriage like he said I should be bleeding a whole lot more than what I am and it should be like I’m having a period and I’m not doing any of that at all I’m not cramping or nothing (knock on wood) does anyone have any suggestions on what this could be or what is going on with me I’m so scared and confused I have already had a daughter pass away she was stillborn when I was at 8 months pregnant and I also have a handsome young man that is 6 years old on January 16th someone please HELP!!!!

Hi can anyone know what this is? I’ve recently 3 days ago stopped my pill. In between me taking them I did miss a few of them. But this morning I got this not sure if it’s because I’ve stopped my pill I got this or not.? Any suggestions

Rainwaltz · 04/09/2019 09:59

I had similar bleeding to OP. Had a scan at 7 weeks because the doctors couldn’t work out if it was just early pregnancy bleeding or a miscarriage / sign of another problem. Also had a heartbeat at 7 week scan and they said they couldn’t see any reason for the bleeding inside but the internal scan made me bleed a little - as did an examination by the GP the week before. EPU discharges me and decided it was just likely my cervix was sensitive with the pregnancy. Sometimes get the off spot here and there throughout the pregnancy but it mostly cleared up by about 10-11 weeks.

Been a healthy pregnancy and currently 26 weeks. Nobody has been in the slightest concerned and all still considered low risk. Lots of midwifes/ professionals saying it’s very common.

The changes of things going wrong are low once it’s viable with heartbeat. Try and relax a little and make sure you talk to your partner if they are around. Mine was very good as he wasn’t going through all the hormonal and instinctive worry I was and kept me grounded but was very supportive.

Dan14A · 04/09/2019 16:26

Can I get this when I’ve recently stopped taking my pill? Not sure what it is caused by
