i am 26 weeks pregnant prior to becoming pregnant i had some test for irregular heart beat - all fine.. since being pregnant my palpatations have got worse as well as feeling out of breath so saw midwife and was admitted for a 1 night stay in hospital where they did 3 ecg's blood test etc all was fine and they said I have ectopic beats which are normal - started to panic as 3 times since being pregnant I have woken up gasping for breath feeling as if someone is suffercating me.. when i stupidly googled said this could be to do with heart failure so carried on looking at symptoms of heart failure and am now worrying thats what I have as it say out of breath, palpations etc.. my questions is does anyone no if they would of been able to pick up heart failure from my 3 ecg's? and am i just been totally paranoid? I am not overweight, don't smoke, BP has always been fine and also had an ultra sound of my heart 2 years ago all of which was normal - just feeling fed up always having some new health worry in this pregnancy as never had any in my previous - any advice would be nice as to why i wake feeling like I am being suffercated my dp says i don't snore

I'm not a medical expert, but I occasionally have ectopic heartbeats.

Feeling out of breath is normal in pregnancy too.

I find I get more of a problem if I overdo it, so I really need to pace myself, and make sure i don't get too tired (or too hot, for some reason)

I would think that 3 ECGs would pick up heart failure, and also I'm sure you would be having more severe symtoms and problems (but I'm not an expert, so I don't know)

Best advice I can give you is to take it easy, don't panic, give your GP a ring tomorrow, and most of all.......

DO NOT GOOGLE EVER AGAIN

(you could google almost any innocent symptoms, and come away convinced you are dying!)

How's your iron? I get palpitations and breathlessness when anaemic.

PaigeTurner · 10/10/2010 13:56

Sorry, I'm not a doctor, but I did visit one after having some scary episodes of feeling like I'd fainted in my sleep - woke up woozy and breathless.

I went to the GP who offered to send me off for ECG etc, but I didn't go in the end as figured breathlessness and palpitations are pretty normal (although horrible) in pregnancy.

Perhaps give your GP a ring tomorrow - and don't stress! It will make you feel worse.

PS: are you lying on your back when asleep? That might make you feel faint.

PrivetDancer · 10/10/2010 13:57

When you wake up breathless are you lying on your back? That can cause breathlessness / faintness when pregnant - try lying on your side if you are.

It does seem fairly unlikely that they've missed heart failure as you've had plenty of tests. Stay away from google!

Just make suer your pottassium is above 3.3mmol ideally about 4 and your magnesium is above 75... ideally 100. These electrolytes help prevemt ecyopicss and help you heart work properly. Obs and gynae are generally un bothered about such things... but as an icu nurse its my bread and butter to chase them.. mine was 2.9 the other day and i had palpatations and felt rubbish. Since replacing ive felt better.
