Has anyone had a 1st dc with a low birth weight and gone onto have subsequent dc with a healthier weight?

DD was born at full term, but was only 5lbs 15oz, no-one had picked up on her low weight during pregnancy, but once she was born I got told that I would be monitored v closely in any subsequent pregnancy to make sure baby/babies remained viable Sad. I was deemed low risk all the way though my 1st pregnancy, had a good birth etc, and now that I am pg again I am quite worried about potential complications.
There was never any explanation for her low weight, I ate healthily, not on any medications etc etc, so don't know how I can avoid it this time around?

Hi - congratulations on pregnancy! My DS1 was 6lbs when he was born (9th centile). It was noticed during pg that he was small and he was scanned throughout but all fine and after staying on 9th centile for his 1st year he is now, at 5yo, around 50th.

DD was born less than 3yrs later, 8lbs, 50th centile where I think she has stayed (if not above).

DS2 born Dec, v scary pg as he was diagnosed with severe early onset IUGR at 20 wk scan. Scanned regularly and he continued to grow along a normal growth curve but underneath the bottom of the chart. Induced at 37wks and born 4lbs 5oz but healthy, no SCBU and home after 3 days during which he had a touch of jaundice and low blood sugar which they had to sort out.
He is still growing steadily below 0.4th centile but is happy, healthy and developmentally fine.

I don't think there is anything you can do about it - I suspect maybe I am no good at growing boys?! Is your DD healthy? If so I would try not to worry about it too much, some babies are just small.

Good luck Grin.

Thank you! The ridiculous thing is now, after a horrible 1st few months with DD, when I got loads of hassle from HVs re her weight, pressure to ff etc, she is now a whopping great almost 3yr old, almost 1m tall, on around the 75th centile for everything! So I had really forgotten about the "small baby" worries.

Glad to hear your DS2 is ok!

My dd1 was 6lbs at birth - she was born only 3 days before due date. I had asked at my last scan about size and was told average size baby but she was quite a lot smaller than average. No-one in the hospital seemed in any way concerned. She was only 5lb 11oz when I took her home as my milk hadn't come in.

DD2 was a week overdue and weighed in at 8lbs.

During one of my ante-natal visits on dd2 the doctor asked ME why dd1 was so small Hmm

Like sleepwhenidie both my girls are now on the 50th centile so the 2lb difference at birth didn't make any difference in the long run.

What size are you and your DP? I am 5'2 and DH is 5'7 so not tall people. Our 50th centile girls seem to be following suit.

My dd was only 5lb 2oz and I was told she was fine during pregnancy. I never got any hassle after her birth and she is still small but on 9th centile. I'm only little too so have tried not to worry, I do wonder if I could have done something differently though. I thought that it was only if they were under 5lb that there was cause for concern? Just look after yourself and enjoy your pregnancy. I took solace in the fact that my small baby made for a nice childbirth experience!

My 1st baby was full term but only 5lbs 6oz , 2nd baby was a lovely chubby 8lbs 7oz, my 1st baby is now 4 and he is now the perfect weight for his height. Smile

DD1 was 5lb7 and a week late. DD2 was 6lb 1 and a week early. Both of them completely healthy - they are both quite tall so I think what they didn't have in weight was made up with length!
I had extra growth scans with dd2 as dd1 was small and as long as she was growing steadily they had no issues (in fact it was quite nice to have the extra scan pics). So please try not to worry - its just an extra precaution.
I've just come to the conclusion I have small (and beautiful) babies but it is hard when people constantly ask if they were prem or if there's something wrong with them Hmm.

Oh I had some horrible comments when DD was little, I'll always remember this woman screwing up her face in distaste and asking how I could "bear" to pick "that" up!! Angry

I am only 5 foot 4, DH 5 foot 7, so all quite short, am actually amazed that DD is shooting up to be so tall!

At 5lbs 15 I didn't think she was tiny but there really was a huge fuss made at the time. Hadn't thought of the bonus of extra scan pics, that will be nice! Grin

Well DS1 was born at 38wks - 6,12 (so not tiny but still quite small, then he piled on mostly a pound a week for a while and is now a v sturdy 4 year old!)

DS2 was born at 40wks - 8,6. So a definite step up.

Am pg with DC3 now, wondering if this will be another step up...ouch!
