I have just read that 3rd babies are always longer and more painful labours?

I have been induced with first 1dc first was once got started very quick just pushing took 2hours so all in all about 4 hours.

I was induced again with 2dc and she was back to back very painful and because of her being back to back it was roughly again about 4 hours, one push and she came out.

has anyone every had a good 3rd labour? im due in feb and a tad nervous.

My Mum's third shot out in 45 minutes. She said it hurt like hell but was over almost before she knew it - she'd had an epidural with me and my brother though so it was quite a change.

crikeybadger · 07/10/2010 20:25

Have never heard that and it wasn't the case for me!

DS3 came out at home with no problems, and it was rather quick too. Just had time to get the two other DSs off to bed. Probably about 4 hours in total and no pain relief needed.

I suppose they're all different and I've always been blessed with good labours but try not to worry. Smile

My third was good. Slightly longer than dd2 because my waters just wouldn't break - bulged for ages. When they went it was all very, very quick. I realised I was contracting at 6 pm, we went to the hospital just before 10 and she she was born at 2.38 am but it was only the bit between midnight and 2.38 that was really hard and I did sit up straight away afterwards and say 'that wasn't too bad' - dh and midwives fell about laughing - I think that's not what I was saying a few minutes before Grin

It sounds like you labour pretty well once you've got going and I don't think you should worry about anything - chances are you'll do so again.

sethstarkaddersmum · 07/10/2010 20:31

my third was fine, slightly longer than dc2 but still short enough and no pain relief due to circumstances.

people probably just say the 3rd one's harder so people don't assume if they've had an easy second that it will be even easier. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Lougle · 07/10/2010 20:46

All induced:

1st 4 hours
2nd 8 hours
3rd 3hrs 20 mins.

hannahsaunt · 08/10/2010 08:52

Ds3 was 40 minutes from start to finish if that helps Grin. I did get to the hospital but it was very nearly the library.

stuffedmk · 08/10/2010 09:26

My old neighbour said the third was the worst but this is the only person I have heard say this so I am inclined to believe that was probably just bad luck rather than the norm.

CuppaTeaJanice · 08/10/2010 09:31

I've heard this before. I figured it was because the first is often slow, tiring and painful, so you expect the same for the second. Second births are often easier, so you are pleasantly surprised. With the third, you expect an even easier birth so it's hard to live up to the expectations.

MumInBeds · 08/10/2010 09:31

Mine have been:

54hours(!!)
19mins (!)
6hours
4minutes(!!!)
5.5hours

I think position, gestation, nutrition and relaxation have just as much of a role as parity in these things.

FoghornLeghorn · 08/10/2010 09:41

Mine wasn't mine was the shortest and easiest. Wasn't easy but certainly not as bad as the other 2.

Good Luck and go with the flow :)

Conundrumish · 08/10/2010 10:39

MuminBeds please tell me that was a typo and that you didn't have a 4 minute from start to finish labour? If not, where were you when it happened?

DC1 4 hours 40 mins established labour [back to back]

DC2 2.25 hours from start to finish

DC3 - lots of (previusly unheard of) pretty bad Braxton Hicks for two weeks, a few hours of early labour while DC turned from back to back, then a couple of hours of proper labour. So, more stopping and starting than my other two.

MumInBeds · 08/10/2010 10:48

It was 4 minutes from knowing for sure I was in labour to her arriving.

It was a surrogate pregnancy and the parents were 4 hours away so I was trying to get the the hospital early to have them check to see if I was in labour so the parents could get here in time.

I'd just got to the labour ward when I had a contraction strong enough that I'd decided it was really labour when I needed to push and very quickly she was here.

If it had been my own baby I would have still been at home pottering about or even walking ds to school. Shock

TotorosOcarina · 08/10/2010 10:49

DS1 - 6 hours

Ds2 - 6 hours

DD - 6 hours.

Pollyanna · 08/10/2010 10:50

mine was the worst (sorry) but she was back to back and i had a horrible hospital experience and dh let me down to (he wasn't feeling very well apparently Hmm so lots of things conspired to make it a bit crap.

Still pretty short though.
