Leaky Breasts at 22 weeks - normal?

I'm actually posting this thread on behave of my sis who hasn't yet discovered the delights of mumsnet. Sis is expecting her first baby in December and at 22 weeks her breasts have started leaking, not lots but enough to mark through clothing. I really can't remember having this problem during pregnancy, is it something she should be concerned about. Next Midwife app in 3 weeks and we can't find any related subjects anywhere!

a colleague told me this in my first preganancy - scared the pants off me. So it does happen. Maybe it will stop. Maybe she will be champion bf with HUGE baby!

Its perfectly normal as far as I'm concerned. With my first pregnancy I started leaking at 15 weeks and by the end of my prgnancy I was sleeping with a towel underneath me. Breastmilk came in after two days and I was incredibly engorged and this coupled with mastitis prevented me from breastfeeding after two weeks, but this is probably nothing to do with having too much milk and more to do with the fact that ds would not latch on. Oh ds was a big baby for my height, he was 9lbs so maybe theres a connection. With this pregnancy I started leaking early again but no where near as much as last time, I'm hoping my breasts have got the hang of it now. Tell her not to worry, it just shows that everythings working normally.

I started leaking really early on during my first pregnancy - enough to have to wear bra pads. I've had two more children since tho and didn't leak at all when I was pg with them. Tell her not to worry.

I have the opposite problem. With DS1+2 I leaked along time before I was due but this time theres nothing and I only have 6 weeks to go so am abit concerned that there won't be any when the baby arrives.
Both times with DS1+2 I couldn't get them to latch on so the fact that there is nothing to 'encourage' another baby to latch on makes me wonder if I'll be bottle feeding again as I really want to breast feed this time.

There's a thread called, somewhat explicitly, Wet Tits, somewhere, which goes into this in detail!

fidget - I recently posted about this too - although a little bit further along (about 27 weeks) I am getting this too...apparently very normal and nothing to worry about. Recommend bra pads if it continues and is staining clothes - although in this heat not sure it would be very comfy!

Moomin · 10/08/2003 20:43

I started leaking at about 20 weeks and continued for rest of pg. It's quite normal. Remember I was pg during hot weather as well and slept on a towel because I couldn't bear wearing a bra with pads in bed in the heat! Production of milk bore no relation to success in bf, though: dd would not latch on at all.

I had milk at 9 weeks! Died off after a while though and has just returned now I'm more or less due. Sign of good hormones I'd say. Nothing to worry about. Oh the joys of pg eh!

Rhubarb · 13/08/2003 21:01

I'm 23 weeks (I think) and mine have been leaking bright yellow liquid for a couple of weeks now. Usually in the bath, but at night I have to take my bra off very carefully as it's all dried onto my bra - ouch!

StripyMouse · 13/08/2003 21:23
