I miss Lemsip Max

Can't be doing with the third degree from the pharmacist - at least not without being armed with some info - so does anyone know anything, apart from Olbas Oil and paracetamol, that might help?

I totally sympathise. Try lemon and ginger tea bags - make it really strong. I have been living on those through a sore throat/cough and it gets lots of fluid into your system too.

PrivetDancer · 05/10/2010 15:58

That's about your lot I think :(
There are olbas oil pastilles you can take, they are absolutely disgusting though..

bugger all really. Agree with the ginger tea, also have a hot bath, will take the shivers out of you and the steam will help.

Sqeez pure lemon juice and drink it with mildy hot (but not boiling water as this breaks down vitamin C) and honey. Fresh ginger is always helpful too. You can boil it for a few minutes with honey, and drink the potion... If you can find aloe vera leaves (some people grow them at home), then sqeez them as use as nose drops - great for beating a sinositis... Goggle your throat with hot water & baking soda or sea salt. Eat garlic and onion. Oregano oil drops are also great - pls google if these are suitable for preganant women (should be ok, but I am not 100% sure)... Hope you feel better soon.

prawn jalfrezi? curry v.good for colds.

Vicks Vapour Rub is ok to use, might help your nose. They also do a nasal inhaler thing (not a spray) which you can keep in your bag which is helpful - though it does make you look like you have a tampon stuffed up your nose when you use it!

For sore throats, I found hot Ribena with a squeeze of honey in it was very soothing. Alternatively, hot lemonade is good - it stings a little initially but the bubbles clear your nose and the heat soothes your throat.

Stodgy but soft foods are good too, I particularly favour macaroni cheese when I have a cold. Slips down easily and the sauce seems to coat a sore throat.

You have my sympathy, I spent the whole of my second trimester bouncing a cold back and forth with my DH!

You can buy this great lemongrass and ginger cordial by Bottle Green (Sainsbury's stock it) which I swear by drunk good and hot when I have a cold. You can add honey too. Steam inhalations will help clear your nose and soothe inflammed throats/chests - you don't need any oils or anything. They've also discovered that chicken soup really does help when you're unwell - it contains anti-viral properties. Ditto to the hot bath. Make sure you're getting lots of rest and just keep the fluids going.

Mmmm Spirael you have just solved my tea dilemma, thank you - macaroni cheese is just what I didn't know I wanted :)

Bobby99 · 05/10/2010 17:15

Drink honey and lemon - that's all my GP would recommend when I was in exactly the same situation as you.

kiwidreamer · 05/10/2010 21:02

Juice half a large lemon top up with hot water but not boiling and add a teaspoon or two of manuka honey - UMF 10 or more, you can get it from health food stores or Waitrose, it is anti bacterial so actually actively fights the germs. Will sooth throat and help you get better, have one if these every few hours it really will help!

GO TO BED

You can take the Glycerin based medicine, I know it's basically sugar but it helped me when I got a sore throat.

You can also take certain types of strepsils, I think the strawberry sugar free ones were the ones the pharmacist gave to me.

Otherwise paracetamol and and early night.
