pregnancy and ?? chicken pox

Hiya

I am 21 weeks pregnant and i have a 2 1/2 ds. His childminder has just told us that chicken pox is around at the minute and that another child with her has it.

My child does not have it yet but I have never had chicken pox before and am now worried

Anybody else experience this and what shall i do. What happens next if anything?

Presumably the other child is not at the childminder's at the moment?

You can have your son vaccinated, it is not 100% protection but better than nothing. Not sure if you can have the vaccination when pregnant.

You can get tested to see if you are immune to chickenpox, I am and have never had it. You may need to fudge the facts and say that you have contact with someone who has chicken pox.

Child not at childminder and DS so far no symptoms but think it is a 2 week incabation period.

I phoned my midwife and have to go for an immunity test to see if i have any immunity to chicken pox

I think if you're at very high risk you can be given the vaccine whilst pregnant but as with all vaccine's it's a risk although the HPA classify it as no risk here.

It is a 2 week incubation period, I don'tknow whether a vaccine for your DS now would do any good.

During 1st trimester I was tested for immunity (my dd1 had the pox), negative, given gigantic vaccine, still caught it. This meant that bump had to be monitored every month - for growth of head and limbs, mainly. I was also seen by the consultant obs/gynae bloke for a talk about possible turn of events.

I have to say, it was a stressful time - but as everyone kept pointing out to me, the stats are very low in terms of negative effects. Also, at 21+ weeks, I think you are on pretty safe ground (I did a lot of inevitable reading!). In the US preg women are routinely screened for Chicken Pox as we are for Rubella - seems sensible to me, but hey.

After all the worry dd2 was completely fine. Although I still blame her totally anarchic behaviour on the pox! Lots of luck with your tests and the rest of your pregnancy!
