MY DS was born just over 8 wks ago. We stayed in hospital for 4 days because he had haemotic disease of the newborn from a blood incomptatibilty which resulted in severe jaundice. After 4 days of photothepary we were allowed home. As they discharged us the Peadatrician casually mentioned that they'd just got my swab results back and I was positive for strep b but not to worry as DS was 4 days old and no action was needed.

Then today I got a phone call from my GP surgery saying THEY had just been given my strep B result and had a perscription for pencillian for me to pick up. I'm confused why I would be treated for it now? Can anyone throw any light on this? I'm bfing so would prefer not to take pencillian if not necessary.

thanks. x

? I don't know. Was it in your urine or from a swab? In pregnancy, if it's in your urine it's treated, in the vagina it's not as that is the normal place it lives.

I can understand them not wanting to give antibiotics to a baby, but don't know why they are treating you...

Try here

Maybe give them a call, I've always found the helpline helpful.

Don't forget it can be passed on by hands, so make sure you keep your hands washed (as a precaution) for the first three months.
