Question re pregnancy testing and pms

Hello All!

I'm new to mums net today so apologies if I'm repeating questions that have been asked many times.

Firstly, I am not sure whether I'm pregnant. My only symptom at the moment is a complete lack of any of my normal pms 'issues' such as mood swings and very painful breasts. These normally would have started about 10 days ago. All of the research I've done so far on the Internet tells me that generally, if you're pregnant pms symptoms are normally the same or worse Confused can anyone tell me any different?

Secondly, when am I best to do a pregnancy test? My period is due on Friday, but have normally had some spotting by now, but nothing. Should I wait until Friday or do it asap?

Thanks in advance for any help, and once again my apologies if I'm asking a question that has been asked many times (or if I'm even posting it in the wrong place!).

I'd do the test today if I were you. Just a standard one from the chemist should do the trick.

If its negative and you still haven't had your period you could try waiting a week and doing another test.

Hi Sarah,
I'm also something of a newbie here, and was just checking these boards out for advice on something else pregnancy-related.
I'm in the same situation as you, except I was due on last Saturday (ish, I've never been totally regular) I think you can use a Clear-blue test before your due date and still get an accurate result (but they are more expensive) or you can wait until a couple of days after you're due and do any of the others. I think I'd just get to Boots in my lunch break and read a few packets.
Best of luck!

Like you I had super duper sore boobs well before my period was due. I read up on pg tests and found First Response can be used I think up to 6 days before your period is due. I did one which came up positive, and then did the other one from the two pack on the day it was actually due just to be sure!

Good luck :)

Hi

You could have a look at the various threads in the Conception section of MN.

For info look for thread about poas (= pee on a stick Smile ).

You could do a test today but there is no guarantee of an accurate result either way. If negative today, you could have tested too early and there are, sadly, a lot of mners who test early, get a positive only for period (also known as af on mn) to arrive and the positive result to disappear (chemical pregnancy).

Probably not really the answer you were looking for though.

If you cannot resist the temptation to poas (I couldn't if I was you) and test, if you get a very strong line which comes up straight away along with the other line, then I would say congrats are in order. If the line is very faint then keep your fingers crossed and test in a few days again.

Good luck.

Let us know the result Sarah, and don't forget the join the MN antenatal group if its positive. Smile

Thanks very much for the advice ladies, I'll pop down to the chemist after work and get one bought. I read somewhere that if you're doing a test early you should test in the morning because that's when the hormone is likely to be highest?

I'm going out with friends form work (Inc my boss) this evening, so not too sure whether I want to know yet as I don't think I'd be be able to keep quiet - I think it would be best to tell hubby first if it's positive!

Thanks, Sarah

Good luck Sarah! At this early stage it is best to test using FMU (first morning urine! You'll get used to the acronyms quickly!)

Incidentally, if you do get your BFP, after telling DH you may want to come on hear and find out when others broke the news to family, friends and especially colleagues. It's difficult keeping such a big secret but lots of people wait for very good reasons...

Anyway, first thing's first!! Good luck with the test and let us know how you get on.

Hear = here! You'll get used to the baby brain typos too Wink

Hello

Ok - did a clear blue test this morning which is negative, one day before AF is due. Must admit I'm slightly shocked as I was pretty sure it'd return a positive, but there we go! If AF is late it'll be the first time ever (I'm 29) and cannot see any other reason as to why it would be late. If AF doesn't arrive, when would you suggest testing again?

Thanks, Sarah

Hi Sarah, I'd probably wait till you're actually late, maybe by 2 days, which I know is easier to advise than do... but that's not based on any medical evidence, just, that's what I'd do. My cycles have never been that regular, normal for me is anything between 21 and 32 days. I'm testing tomorrow as that will be 34 days so will hold your hand - you don't say which result you're hoping for?

gingerkirsty · 30/09/2010 10:30

Yes I'd test again, you can get a false negative - did clear blue say you could test before AF due?

SarahADI · 30/09/2010 12:15

It's a long story of many years where we thought we wouldn't be able to have children due to various health issues on both sides. Recently my DH has been able to come off the tablets and I'm now also ok too, so I stopped taking the pill. We're not 'trying' as such, more of a 'wait and see if it happens' as we don't really want to get our hopes up after resigning ourselves to the fact it would never happen. To be honest I think it'd be a happy, but slightly shocked response if it does turn out positive as I/we never expected it to be able to happen. I always thought that we'd get the all clear with health and then run into other problems!

If it turns jot to be negative and AF does arrive, we'll carry on as usual and I'll be left wondering why I had no pms this month and AF was late as this has never happened! If it doesn't arrive I think I'll re-test on Monday (would be 3 days late).

Thanks once again for the advice, much appreciated!

Thanks, Sarah

Oops, forgot to say that the clear blue said you could use it up to 6 days early :)
