Rib pain

I'm 20 weeks pregnant and I am getting pains in my ribs. It started at the top of the ribcage on the left side, particulary when lying on that side. Its getting a bit worse now and has also started on my right side.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal or do I need to be thinking about contacting the midwife or GP?

It's probably a little head rammed into your ribs, I know that was always why I got rib pain. I know lots of women get rib pain during pregnancy due to little ones putting pressure on their ribs so I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I had awful rib pain with my first preg and was told it was the ribs 'flaring' to make room.

My ribs never went back after the birth so i didn't get the pain in my second preg. And I still measure much bigger under my boobs than i did before I was preg.

I found wearing a bump support helped a lot. It seemed to stop the pulling pain a bit.

Do mention it to your GP or MW though just incase it's not the same thing as I had.

Good luck. Grin

Also get pain in my ribs. I've had it from about 20 weeks in both my pregnancies and I'm afraid to say it just gets worse. As you say, it is lying on my side which is most uncomfortable.

No harm in asking the MW just to be sure but I think it is quite common.

It did go as soon as the baby was born last time!

Thanks for your replies.

I have seen the midwife today to get it checked and she said that it could be rib flare, or er.......wind! Either way, as long as I know that its not too serious, I can relax a little.
