Poll - those of you who have/had pre-eclampsia, when did you deliver?

Starberries · 27/09/2010 16:46

DP is 23+2 with DC1. Has pre-eclampsia and a 1-artery umbilical cord (in 98% of pregnancies there are 2 arteries). This couple together with the fact baby's fluid volume is reduced mean he could stand a chance of not growing properly.

DP was born at 23.5 weeks 25 years ago Shock and we were hoping it's not genetic but now it's looking like it Sad - her mum had pre-eclampsia also.

Can I just ask who's had pre-eclampsia - when did you deliver? Thanks ladies

I had PE spotted at around 33 weeks, although, looking back it probably started around 30/31 weeks. I was carrying identical twin girls and delivered at 33+6 as I was going into kidney failure. 24hours later I was pretty much back to normal, and my twins were 4lb6 and 4lb14! They spent 2 weeks in SCBU and are now healthy 5 year olds. Am now 28 weeks with dc3 and nervous...hope all continues well for you

lucybrad · 27/09/2010 19:30

bumping for your poll - there must be more that have had pre eclampsia!

Starberries · 27/09/2010 19:32

That's what I would have thought lucy!

goodlife how scary for you - my auntie also had twins early (though hers were 31 weeks and spent 6 weeks in SCBU) - good luck for this pregnancy!!

I had pre-eclampsia very late (or spotted late)in pregnancy and was very lucky, with DS born (after a failed induction and emergency section) one day before his due date. So I don't think this is ever so relevant to your case, but didn't want to ignore your thread. Good luck.

Threelittleducks · 27/09/2010 19:36

I had pre-eclampsia last pg (although pretty mild by comparison to some). I was monitored weekly and made it to 40+3 with extremely big healthy boy. I think it started later on though (luckily) at about 26 weeks. By 30 weeks I was ill and really struggling, but by all accounts well enough to carry on (although really miserable and really unwell).

I was very ill though - my bp was through the roof and we had an emcs due to foetal distress caused by PE. Not nice, but we made it.

Everything crossed for you all. xxx

I had pre-eclampsia spotted fairly late, waters brokes very early and delivered at 34+5. Ds was 4 pounds but we were only in hospital a week and he's now a very healthy and huge 6 month old Smile

LtEveDallas · 27/09/2010 19:47

Pre ex spotted at 22 weeks. Hospitalised straight away, put on potassium drip and monitored continuously. Had dd at 35 weeks, born 3lb 11, down to 3lb 3 in 48 hours.

SCBU for 4 weeks, but perfect and is now a very loud, very clever, very opinionated 5 yr old with no health problems at all

whomovedmychocolate · 27/09/2010 19:48

Delivered DS at 37 weeks
Delivered DD at 42 weeks.

Both PET. Actual eclampsia with DD.

Long term, both are fine. Both came out the catflap route though (cs)

LtEveDallas · 27/09/2010 19:52

Sorry, meant to put a Grin at the end there, and wish you all the best. BTW was told DD prob stopped growing at 30 weeks, she was very small compared to her peers up to age 3, but is now one of the tallest in her class.

Try not to worry too much, it doesn't mean the end of the world, and if the docs are already aware then your DP should be in the best hands
x

I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia at 35 weeks. When it got worse at 38 weeks I was induced. DD1 was born healthy and I was immediatly fine.

ItWasADarkAndStormyNight · 27/09/2010 20:17

Yeah an emcs for me too btw, love came through the cat flap!

bruffin · 27/09/2010 20:41

II was taken in to hospital at 32 weeks. Monitered until 38 weeks when everything kicked off and I was induced

ragdollismyname · 27/09/2010 20:51

i was diagnosed at 34 wks, kept in hosp for a wk and induced a wk later at 35 wks. My dd was 3lb 13oz and spent 2wks in scbu. She is now 22mths, petite but perfect! Think it depends how severe pre-eclampsia is and how early it starts. Best wishes x

mamasunshine · 28/09/2010 08:57

I was admitted into hospital at 31 wks with pre-eclampsia. They managed to keep me 'stable' in hospital on blood pressure drugs etc until 34 wks when needed an EMCS. Baby was 3lb6 as had IUGR (not growing properly due to PET) and he was in SCBU for 4.5 wks. I wish you all the best and your dp is in the best hands, hopefully with meds and bed rest etc the baby will stay put for a while longer. It's a very stressful time, but 2.6 yrs later my ds1 is perfect, average weight/height and the whole experience has almost been forgotten (well maybe hidden somewhere!) Also the hospital should ne preparing you for having a premature baby, e'g taking you to have a look at the SCBU, so it's not so much of a shock when/if you have to have baby in there. Good luck x

I didn't get PE but was told I would have if I remained pregnant as it starts in the placenta. I think my case is relevant as my DS did stop growing, probably around 22-23 weeks. He was delivered at 27 weeks weighing 1lb 4oz. He had a rocky start in was in hospital for a long time but he's healthy now.

I hope your DP is somewhere with a good foetal medicine unit and NNU. The FMU where I was made the decision to deliver DS at the right time and saved his life. I don't want to freak you out but just wanted to let you know that there's hope even for very tiny ones. I hope your DP continues her pregnancy for many long and boring weeks! HTH

BerryLellow · 28/09/2010 09:16

I had it quite late so probably not too relevant but DS1 I was diagnosed at 35 weeks, induced 10 days later. I was quite poorly by then. DS2 I was induced just after 38 weeks as I was starting to get the symptoms a few days earlier.

Best of luck, it must be so frightening for you both.

WillbeanChariot · 28/09/2010 09:20

Sorry for double post- bloody phone!

Julezboo · 28/09/2010 09:52

Spotted at 31 weeks, was born at 31+6.Mine was very advanced though! And I didnt get it again in next pregnancy!

baddyfreckleface · 28/09/2010 15:19

my PE was spotted at about 35 weeks, and was in and out of hospital until 37 weeks when Dd was born by emergency cs.
I never felt very ill, except for headaches (which i get anyway). Dd was 5lb 12 and after a little stay in scbu for oxygen (she was gasping a little, possibly as she wasnt expecting to see daylight yet! We were both fine.
I was on BP tablets for a couple of months but all good now. Just starting to think about having another!

Hope everything goes well for you

fireblademum · 28/09/2010 18:38

hi
my PE was picked up at 28 weeks,by my midwife. I had no symptoms. i was put on labetalol and i was in and out of hospital, (and was monitored at a day unit on the rare occasions i wasnt admitted that week -lots of fun and games with various complications including a premature labour they managed to stop)
at week 34+5 i went to the day unit for a quick check up and was asked how i felt about 'having the baby this weekend' I had my beautiful DD (3lb 14) by emergency section a few hours later. 2 hours after that i was in intensive care as my blood pressure had rocketed. DD was in special care for 2 weeks till she gained enough weight to come home but was otherwise fine. we are both ok now (5 months later) and i am off all the medication. i cant thank the wonderful staff enough, it was very stressful at the time but ended up being a positive experience due to the fantastic support we got. good luck x

SkiHorseWonAWean · 28/09/2010 18:44

Diagnosed at 36+3, induced at 36+5, failed, emcs, SCBU for 3 days. All healthy now. :)
