contractions at 29 weeks

My sister in law is 29 weeks pregnant and yesterday went to hospital as she was having contractions. Contractions stopped but the Doctor said that her cervix was slightly effaced. She has been given steroid injections to help the baby's lungs to mature in case of premature labour.

Has anyone got any positive stories or information I can tell her? She is obviously very worried, as am I.

A neonatal intensive care doctor I know told me that from 28 weeks onward the prognosis for premature babies is really pretty good. 24 weeks is the point of "viability" but in fact the chances of surviving at that point without significant physical/mental difficulties in later life are quite slim.
When I got to 28 weeks I breathed a bit of a sigh of relief having being told that. They might well be able to stop things and keep the baby in for a few more weeks, but in case they can't, hopefully baby should be ok anyway. Good luck.
