Cystits in pregnancy??

Hi There

Felt a bit weird this morning, and when I wee I feel like when I normally get cystitis, so thought I'd pop in to see midwife, who happens to hold a clinic in our village on a Monday morning (handy!) all fine re protein, heartbeat, BP very slightly elevated. There was a tiny amount of blood in my sample, so she sent it off.

I am due to see my consultant on Wednesay anyway, but any ideas what I can do in the meantime, to try and stave any infection off? I had pre-eclampsia in last pg, so keen to avoid any kind of kidney abuse! Have been guzzling cranberry juice all morning, but can I take any over the counter medicines - no idea why I didn't ask the midwife this!!

Thank you all xx

You can't take over the counter stuff for cystitis when pregnant. I'm surprised she didn't sort a prescription for antibiotics, it's important to get it treated.

Defo don't take over the counter stuff. Keep drinking cranberry juice and loads of water.
If I were you I'd go and see GP straight away so you can get antibiotics. The sooner it is treated, the better.

I think she wanted to wait to get the results on Wednesday so I can talk to the cons about it, I suppose there's no point taking antibiotics if there is nothing there, but I really feel its coming! I would have been more pushy if I hadn't had my appt first thing on Wed morning.

I'd probably give your consultant a call before Weds if I were you. This happened to me and I went from mild cystitis symptoms to full blown kidney infection in about 24 hours (I was about 33 weeks) and ended up being admitted to hospital.

Not sure how far along you are but it can get very tricky very quickly when you're pg as when the baby gets bigger it can put pressure on the bladder and stop it emptying properly and so infections or bugs multiply really quickly. (Which is what happened to me).

Sorry, not being alarmist! Unless your symptoms are getting a lot worse I wouldn't worry too much but definitely worth speaking to someone before Weds to be on the safe side! Also cystitis is pretty bloody uncomfortable so you don't want to be suffering if you don't have to!

Thank you - symptoms not getting worse particularly, think I will ring the gp or the hospital, just to be on the safe side. I am currently 28+1 btw.

i had a terrible bladder infection. it went from mild to severe within 2 hours and my temperature jumped to 38.5 C. if you start experiencing sharp pains or have fever, you should immediately go an ER and get anti-biotics. otherwise, you hvae to drink lots of water and/or cranberry juice to cleanse the system...hope you feel better soon!
