please help me interpret?

My LMP was 28 July, I have irregular cycle, I know almost for sure that I conceived on or after 16 August and I got my first positive test on September 1st.
I felt my symptoms were diminishing so I went for a private early pregnancy scan yesterday. The sonographer could not find a heartbeat, and said there was a gestational sac 11 mm x 18 mm x 19 mm; yolk sac was present, embryo was 'inconclusive'
I was told to come back for another scan in a week but this was most likely a 'non continuing' pregnancy, and this was 'sad' news, and I should book in for a d and c if next week's scan wasn't good.
Today I talked to midwife and she said there is a wide margin for error at this stage and not to give up hope, and maybe wait another 2 or 3 weeks for another scan.
I don't really want to wait, but also don't want to have a d and c on a viable pregnancy, so am not sure what to do or think....

IMO the private place gave you not great info. You shouldn't be booked in for an ERPC/D&C unless you've definitely MCed (assumed the pregnancy is wanted!). Also, most private clinics will recommend NOT having reassurrance scans before 8 weeks as an inconclusive scan is exactly that - inconclusive - so they can cause unnecessary stress.

Are you going in for an NHS EPU scan next time?

I would do as your midwife said. Wait and see, you don't want to act on "inconclusive".

Hi Never, I had bad bleeding at 6 weeks and went for an early scan and the midwife couldn't find a heartbeat but she reassured me that the difference between 6 weeks,2 days and 6 weeks 7 days is huge. Sure enough there was a healthy strong heartbeat the next time.
Don't book anything until you get another scan or two done. If you are a bit nervous about using that scanning service again book one with another company.

I can't really advice but I would say don't have the D & C before you know for absolute certain that the baby has died. I was booked for a D & C and my ds2 would not be upstairs in bed now if it wasn't for a woman needing an emergency c-section. I really hope things work out okay for you.

One other thing, when I did pass the feotus it wasn't that bad, obviously devastating but the actual act was over in seconds.

I was reconciled to losing the pregnancy from what was said at the scan but also felt they weren't really really listening when I told them I knew when I conceived and even though they were describing the pregnancy as 8 weeks I was thinking of it more like 7 or even a tiny bit less.
so I will definitely go elsewhere for another series of scans in case there is any hope

I had a scan when I was 'meant' to be 6 wks 4 days. No heartbeat visible, and no yolk sac seen. I was told the pregnancy was 'unlikely to be viable'. I had to go back in 2 weeks for a scan, when I was 'meant' to be 8wks+6days. Lo and behold, there was a heartbeat and baby was matching the size he should be. I am now 23+6, and baby is currently kicking the crap bejeezus out of my internal organs.

hi Never, i have been doing a lot of research on fetal medicine specialists and Professor Eric Jauniaux at the portland hospital has come up as one of the top experts worldwide in this field. i'd say book with him for a scan next week... i believe a scan is around gbp200 - i think it is totally worth it to have a peace of mind... other highly recommended fetal medicine specialists are dr Guy Thorpe-Beeston and dr Demetrios Economides. Thorpe Beeston has his own clinic at harley street and Economides sees patients at the portland hospital, royal free hospital and harley street. i hope this helps.

thanks for all the great information. Lilly13, I am afraid I am not in the UK for the next few months so can't see anyone there. My pregnancy symptoms haven't quite disappeared, I just feel a bit pregnant rather than very pregnant. Such torture not knowing but thinking the worst
