Is it ok to eat in pregnancy? Possibly a bit late to ask as I've been tucking into a greek salad for lunch every dat this week Blush. It's the only thing I can face eating though!

Yes, it's on the safe lists. I think ideally it should be made with pasteurised milk, but TBH afaik you're likely to get sick from not-well-washed salad.

Ah good Smile. I get confused with the cheeses...

Feta is okay but be careful of the soft, spreadable goats cheese - Chevre I think its called or something like that! Its often made not in the UK and just need to check its pasturised.

theres a detailed list of all cheeses by name that are ok,you can googleit, look for pregnancy + cheese

lilly13 · 25/09/2010 13:34

feta is okay. it is staple food of many greek women and they are totally fine with it. avoid soft and hard cheeses made from unpasteurised milk (eg, many french cheeses), so read lebels at the food store.

I too was only able to stomach greek salad (or its separate ingredients) during my first trimester. My MW said feta is fine, which is just as well as I would have been cranky without it.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 25/09/2010 19:40

Hard unpasturised cheese is fine, Lilly! Smile Just not the soft unpasturised stuff, or mould-ripened, or blue cheeses.

Feta is good. Feta you buy in British supermarkets (as opposed to Greek farmers' markets, maybe?) is pasturised. I think people used to be a bit iffy about it because there used to be proscriptions about eating goat or sheep cheeses while pregnant (don't know why) but as far as I know, HCPs say sheep and goat cheeses are fine if pasturised, or hard.

The only thing that ever made me sick in pregnancy was eating Feta. Just to be contrary.

LadyBaiter · 26/09/2010 11:25

Thank you, I had googled, but perhaps looked at the wrong site, it just said to avoid soft cheese.

hoolabombshell - I'm wondering if my craving had something to do with the possibilty that we concieved whilst holidaying in Greece!

I'm having a Greek Salad phase too. I'm 16 weeks. Olives and feta were my obsession in my last pregnancy too. Maybe Greek Salad is a common ciaving?
