Why are my front and back ribs digging into me?

Hi am 30 weeks pregnant and am suffering pretty bad with spd. Now to add to my pain I am also getting (for the last two weeks) constant pain in my back ribs on my right side and my front ribs as if they are digging into me. Does anyone know is this the baby or what I can do to help it. I am so fed up as I can get comfortable.

OP I could have written your post, I went to the Docs today with a very similar problem and apparently SPD doesn't only affect the pelvis, it can also affect the ligaments in the ribs as well which can cause pain.

You can do some stretches where you sit, raise your arm above your head and lean to the side. I've found that walking around the living room helps and sleeping on my left hand side at night.

I'm sorry you're suffering, have you got an appointment with the physion soon? They should be able to help.

I have also had this alongside spd. Dr said it was a trapped nerve.

I have been seeing an osteopath for the spd and she has also worked on the ribs to release the nerve it has been a lifesaver.

She also suggested breathing exercises see here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/1039223-Sore-Ribs-how-do-I-relieve-them/AllOnOnePage#21263897.

It should say stretch the right arm.

Wow thanks ladies. I didnt realise SPD could affect other parts of the body, I just assumed it was the pelvic region and this was something else. I have an appointment the week after next for physio but kind of thinking its all too little too late given I have had SPD pain since about 14 weeks. I could never have believed pregnancy could be so painful. Roll on EDD.

SPD cannot affect other parts of the body - it is dysfunction of the SP joint. But the relaxin hormone that means everything loosens up in pregnancy (and so can lead to SPD) affects the whole body.
