Abdominal pain when sneezed!

Hi,

This may sound odd but I am 18 weeks pregnant and this morning I was lying on bed and suddenly sneezed and experienced very sharp pains in my lower abdomen, it was quite intense and gave both my husband and I a real shock, had to do deep briefing!

Anyone else experienced this? Ps my cat earlier had been lying on my tummy and walking on it a bit, not sure if related! She loves lying with us in the morning!

Yes - it was quite a shock, but I looked it up and it's seemingly normal (though I can't remember what caused it, round ligament?).

Andie20521 · 22/09/2010 08:35

It perfectly normal!

The ligament are stretched taut like an elastic band and the extra pressure when you sneeze causes the pain. It can happen if you try to get up too quickly, or change position the way you would have before you started to expand as well.

It's a real nasty surprise when it happens at first, but I found that if I held/supported the area when it happened it took some of the sharpness away.

It does go away, once your ligaments have stretched and grown more more, for me that was a few weeks or so.

I hope it's normal as I've had this since I was about 14 weeks and now 20 weeks and all is well. I'm sneezing a lot more as well, ouch!

passionberry · 22/09/2010 09:00

Yes - I used to get that a lot when I sneezed, coughed or got up too quickly.

Deliaskis · 22/09/2010 09:08

Hi there,

I've had this since very early on, basically tummy muscles playing havoc with otherwise perfectly normal movements!

I get it when I sneeze, when I turn over in bed (unless I plan it and move literally one limb at a time and then do a pilates style supported body lift to get my torso turned over), when I get up off the sofa weirdly etc.

It's just muscles and ligaments re-adjusting. When it first happened to me though it was quite early on and I honestly worried that a sneeze could make be hurting the baby.

Oh god it's not just me...!

smoggii · 22/09/2010 10:25

It happens to me too.

And coincidentally my cat has taken to lying on my belly since i got pregnant, it must be a bit warmer, but i really don't think she could cause any damage she's only little. My dog on the other hand...

TooImmature2BMum · 25/09/2010 18:37

I've been getting this a lot too! It is a lot more painful than you would think it could be, but weirdly, because it didn't seem to be in my womb but to the sides of it, I didn't really worry. All the same, I'm glad it's normal!

NowPanicAndFreakOut · 25/09/2010 21:01

I also had this - but from about 6 weeks - it was a bit worrying. However, now I'm 17 weeks (and bump is a bit more developed!) it seems to have gone / eased off. In fact I just sneezed as I typed this and felt nothing Smile

Samraves · 26/09/2010 11:31

I have had this on and off since about 14 weeks - not getting it so much right now, but it just comes and goes... I think it is normal - although can be very painful for a few minutes!

So glad to see this thread - i have been getting this too! not every time but quite often when I cough or sneeze there is a sharp pain in the baby department, only lasts a second though. At first I wondered if it was the baby moving but I now think it's more likely to be muscles or ligaments.
Am 17 weeks now by the way.
