Too little weight gain?

I'm 17 wks pregnant with no1 so this is all a bit new to me. I have read the books but this is bugging me.

The MW ony weighed me at the surgery when I first went in. I had my 16 wks appt but no weigh in. I've been keeping an eye at home and I've only put about 3 lbs on.

Am eating a balanced diet with the occassional cake or biscuit. Handful of nuts and some crackers and cheese when I get home, much less exercise than before.

I have changed shape and have a bump but I think its at the cost of fat coming from everywhere else on my body.

Does this sound ok? I want to make sure that I as well as the little 'un are ok at the end of this.

Thanks

Jo

Congrats Catspersonalbanker on your pregnancy! I wouldn't worry about your weight. As Kiki says it depends on person to person. I never gain more than about 1 stone during my pregnancies (am 40 weeks today with DC3) and about half of that is gained in the first 3 months. Everyone is different. Your baby will be getting lots of good stuff and growing if you are eating a sensible well balanced diet. One of my friends who has the most amazing figure, gained 5 stone with her first, and about 3 1/2 with her 2nd and 3rd. She lost the weight sensibly after each birth and looked fab both during her pregnancies and after. Please don't worry. We are all different.

I guess there should be no problem as long you are getting around 1800/2000 calories a day (unless you are 4 ft 8 or something, in which case you probably need slightly less!) Have a look at what you are eating and just check that you are getting roughly that, and if you are - don't stress! Everyone is different and puts on different amounts and does it at various stages of pregnancy.

Don't worry about it. I am normally 7.5 stones and hardly put on any weight in my first preg (didn't go above 8 st). I gave birth to a 6lb3oz baby. As long as you are eating well, it shouldn't be a problem.

saoirse86 · 20/09/2010 12:19

sh77 wow!

I was only weighed when I went for my first scan which turned out to be 16+3 and I was weighed at 9st 4lb but I know I was 8st 5lb around the day I conceived. I'm now 39+3 and think I'm about 12 stone but not sure. I've only been weighed that one time through my whole pregnancy.
I don't think the MW's are too bothered about your weight gain unless there are any signs the baby's not developing. As long as you start to feel movements as normal in the next few weeks, your 20 week scan looks ok, and your meausrements are ok when they start doing them, don't worry about your weight. At least you won't have loads to lose afterwards like I have!

i was so sick with both of my dcs that i lost a stone at the beg and with dc2 didn't put on any weight throughout the whole pg.still had a bump though.

Hi,

Thanks to everyone for replying. I am only 5 ft 1 was 61 kgs before, lost 3lbs and according to home scales am 60.5kgs now but I'm sure they must be different to the scales in the drs. Belly is definitley growing and am up a band width and 2 cups sizes

I will stop worrying about this about this. Heartbeat was clear and strong at the 16wk appt and 20 wk scan is on 1st October.

thanks again

Hi Catspersonalbanker,

I am 18 weeks and have only put on about 7 pounds at the most, and when I was 16 weeks it was about 4, so don't worry, every pregnancy is different! Also, when on home scales remember to keep clothes on like you do when you visit midwife otherwise it will be much lighter!

Honestly clothes add at least 2 pounds I reckon.

lilmamma · 21/09/2010 09:10

and the doctors scales could be older, and also do they get calibrated,as they probably have hundreds of people jumping on and off them, unlike the scales at home..

You usually put weight on.more towards the end of the pregnancy,as at the beginning its more cells and stuff being made,so no need really for extra food.

My dd is 27 weeks and has put on 17lb..she is tall and slim, and just has a neat bump.

coraltoes · 21/09/2010 13:54

a lot of people actually lose a bit of weight to start with, cos of morning sickness. Dont fret, just enjoy the fact you're not prone to ballooning!!

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 21/09/2010 17:18

Catspersonalbanker: I'm so glad you mentioned this..as it's been bugging me too.

I'm also 17 weeks and I've lost weight. At my 16 week check up, MW was very happy with everything. I'm sure I'll balloon at a later date.

beckie90 · 21/09/2010 17:51

i think each person is different really, if your eating well then i think its not a worry, last pregnancy i put on 3 and a half stone i was underweight before it. but this time im 10 weeks pregnant and have gone from 8 stone 12 to 7 stone 12, just since ive been pregnant its really buggin me as im 5'6 so dont really look too healthy at the moment
