Hi All

Just looking for a bit of advice / reassurance really...

Trying to keep our sex life going as much as possible (i.e. hardly anything really in comparison to before being pregnant!) I'm 6 months now and yesterday sex was very painful and awkward, felt like i was being stabbed (never had anything like this previously), so we had to stop for a minute but then perserved (sorry TMI! Wink) anyway, about 30mins afterwards i started getting dull stabbing (almost cramping) pains in my belly that lasted for most of the day, they would come and go about every minute and lasted about 3-5 seconds.

Anyone else experienced this? I don't want to do anything harmful and i keep reading that sex throughout pregnancy is good for us and our relationships, but it did hurt and i was very worried afterward...

Any advice? Smile

well, I get pain afterwards. Sort of a cramping pain. Sometimes it's not too bad and sometimes it lasts for quite a few hours afterwards. I got worried the first time but I read pain/crampyish feeling is quite common. I'm not saying that I know all is perfect with you, as I always think get it checked out just incase, but I think that (especially as the sex was painful and awkward) you might just be having 'normal' pains. I've found sex really quite painful since getting pg - DH says it's as we've gone for so long without (I felt terrible in first tri), I say it's as I'm too tired and don't really have much interest so my body isn't ready. We tend to give up after a few minutes with the penetration as I just feel so uncomfy and my ladybits feel quite tender.

Apparently sex when you're pregnant can cause mini contractions, which are completely harmless, but can be worrying and still painful.

I'm pretty sure that you have nothing to worry about and what you are experiencing is completely normal but if you are worried speak to the MW.

"DH says it's as we've gone for so long without" OMG! Is he having a laugh? You don't seize up after a few months! I hope he was joking :o He'll be telling you his balls are going blue next and it's all your fault.

I think cramps after orgasm are fairly common, but not sure about actual painful sex, but then sometimes I am tender all over for no obvious reason. I think if you find it painful next time too you should mention it to your midwife, could be an infection or something?

Oh, by "mini contractions" I meant "not significant enough to bring on labour or anything like that," BTW Smile.

I've always found the more heavily pregnant I am the more likely to have that kind of stabbing pain afterwards. I'm certain that for me it is my abdominal muscles (which are being stretched and under stress anyway). You might see if it helps if he does all the work, if you see what I mean. Also, maybe find positions where penetration is less deep, that may be more comfortable for you. Oh, and one more thing that might seem totally gross, but it could be trapped wind if your sides/tummy hurts during sex. If you are having pains after, try seeing if there is a position that relieves the pain (i.e. stomach muscles completely relaxed) and if that works its probably muscle cramps from tired abdominals.
