Baby slings / carriers

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but couldn't find a better section.

I want to get slings or carrier things for my twins (due in a couple of months) and there are so many on the market, so I'm looking for recommendations. Expense is an issue as I'll have to buy two - one for me and one for DH. Ideally I'll just buy two of the same.

But... my real issue is that I'm quite large and I'm worried about finding one that fits, so can anyone give me some advice? I was a size 24 pre-preg (and had an ample chest then - now it's gigantic!)

Anyone got any good suggestions? I've seen SnugBaby online and they look nice and say they are suitable for a ladies 22/24 - has anyone used them?

There's a sling and carrier forum here, you might be able to find out what you're after there.

If you're just looking for opinions and experiences then here's mine- I have 2 baby carriers, a babybjorn and a ring sling. I absolutely hate the babybjorn, it's really uncomfortable and despite a hip strap that cut off the circulation to my lower body, DD still dangled off my shoulders. I wonder if it's because of my big boobs, she was sort of at an angle Blush DH loved it though.

I had much better luck with my ring sling and it's very long so should fit you just fine. There are loads of different brands. The snugbaby one (a mei tai carrier) should also work pretty well.

If there's a sling group near you then they might be able to lend you some to try them out before you buy them. Try here

HTH :) Good luck with the twins!

Have you looked on the TAMBA website? When I had my twins I vaguely considered baby slings...didn't realise you could get twin ones, and even ones for triplets!! Google, and see what comes up...and good luck - twins are brilliant!!

Thanks Rouge - hadn't found the forum so just looking through some of the threads on it now. Will also check out your other link too.

Goodlife I hadn't even considered a sling for twins! Looking at some now...

Moby wrap fits twins in & has enough material to fit round any size.

You might find that you have your DH have different ideas about what is best. I have (one baby) - and a wrap sling as well as a baby bjorn.

I like the comfort of the wrap sling, whereas DH finds it too fiddly and prefers the babybjorn which i find very uncomfortable. An advantage of a wrap sling that someone else has pointed out is that esp when they are small you could put both twins in it.

Both have pros and cons - eg with the babybjorn I can get the baby out and into his cot or carseat without him waking, impossible with the wrap sling.

hated the baby bjorn. Used a Kari-me which was good and will use it again but even at only a size 14ish there wasn't a lot of spare length once you've tied it all up. Ring slings look good but haven't tried one

I'm liking the look of the Moby wrap - hadn't even heard of it before. Is it just me or does anyone think it would look a bit odd on DH? The whole design just seems a bit mumsy....

I loved the Baby Bjorn (to my surprise) and it was very comfy until DD reached about 10 kilos at which point I stopped using it.

I had initially thought I'd be more into a sling and brought one for £35 but I found DD got all twisted up in it & I wasn't comfortable using it for her to sleep in. I think I needed someone experienced to help me really. I did use the sling more when she outgrew the Baby Bjorn - great for on hip carrying. Never figured out how to BF using the sling.

I don't think I'd buy a sling again - there are lots of websites showing you how easy they are to make, or to tie yourself from long pieces of fabric - will take some practice but they all do.
