is there any way to know if you are having twins other than a scan?? would your hcg levels be higher or anything?

Hi Claire Smile

I found some info on twins here, do you suspect you're having twins?

claire87 · 16/09/2010 12:21

Well in that case you may be, congratulations.

Maybe you should try and get a private scan done, to try and put your mind at ease either way?

Increased morning sickness is a symptom of twins or so I've been told.

Although I did some reading because my OH has twins in his family and read that identical twins are not hereditary but non-identical twins are and since your dad was a twin (assuming non identical) you probably carry the gene too. But, its only science, it only proves a theory until someone else proves it wrong.

Problem with thinking you are having twins though is (like my OH who was convinced we were) you end up all disappointed at the scan when/if you only find one baby.

claire87 · 16/09/2010 13:49

oh trust me i will not be disappointed if there is only one baby lol how do you get private scans done? x

Sorry to be unhelpful but just google it.

If I wanted one I'd goggle "ultrasound scan Guildford" and I came up with this link and a cost of between £200 and £300.

First time round I was convinced I was having twins - and I was!! I also had no morning sickness whatsoever - lucky me!! Just one in the oven this time round, but I already knew that - spooky Grin

Twins only run down the female side of the family so your dad being a twin and even having twins doesn't increase your chances, unless the twins are your full siblings (same mother) in which case it does slightly. Very wide range of what's normal for hCG levels so don't read too much into that.

1Catherine1 · 18/09/2010 20:48

popstar The reading I did seemed to disagree with you there. If your father is a twin (non-identical) it will not effect the likely hood of one of his children being a twin but he could carry the gene which could be passed onto his daughter which might increase her chances of having twins. I have done some pretty intensive reading about it in fear of my OHs prediction of twins. But again, I don't know since I'm not an expert on twins and I also read other research that disagreed. I don't believe either theory has been completely discredited.

saoirse86 · 18/09/2010 21:55

When I found out I was pregnant my OH was completely convinced we were having twins and kept telling everyone he thought that. I don't really know why he thought it apart from the fact that I'm a non-identical twin. When I had my first scan I was 16+3 and not 12 weeks like we though. He decided that he was still kind of right because I was obviously giving out strong pregnancy vibes that had just confused him!
It's only about 1 in 80 births I think that are twins (without fertility treatment)so it's unlikely even with the genetics.

Lavitabellissima · 18/09/2010 22:01

I am pregnant with twins and just knew, I wasn't surprised at all when we had confirmation Smile

We paid £130 for a private scan on Harley St as I couldn't wait 12 weeks until my NHS scan. I was really sick and am in fact still puking now at 28 weeks Sad

Congratulations either way Smile

BagofHolly · 19/09/2010 01:46

I'm pregnant with twins and I just knew too. We had very early scans, weekly from 6 weeks but even before then I knew. My hcg was 10x higher than it had been for my singleton son, but also, I couldn't think straight! Nappy brain kicked in very early and the smell of pretty much anything made me gip!

popstar · 20/09/2010 21:04

It's not about carrying a gene. It's about multiple ovulation which your father didn't do! Am obstetrician- most twins I've seen there's no prior family history, so mostly random if you ask me.
